Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of morally flawed and often tragic characters. A prime example of the latter is Rains Fall, the chief of the Wapiti Indian tribe. He is a man saddled with an almost impossible mission: preserving the safety of his tribe in a rapidly unforgiving and dangerous world.

Rains Fall faces stiff opposition from the U.S. Army as well as from the greedy industrialist Leviticus Cornwall. Arthur Morgan has the option of helping Rains Fall and his tribe from the machinations of their enemies. Rains Fall is undoubtedly one of the most interesting characters in the game, so finding out everything there is to know about him is quite a rewarding experience.

5 Chief Of The Wapiti Tribe

Native Americans On Horseback From Red Dead Redemption 2

Rains Fall is the chief of the Wapiti, a Native American clan who once called the plains of New Hanover their home. Like many real-life tribes at the time, Rains Fall and the Wapiti are forced to live on a reservation. Although they resisted at first, the Wapiti are seemingly resigned to their fate.

Rains Fall himself is implied to have been a much-respected warrior in his youth. However, by the time Arthur meets him, Rains Fall is convinced of the merits of a more pacifist approach. He recognizes the futility of continued opposition against the U.S. Army. Some in the tribe, including his son Eagle Flies, rejects this peaceful strategy and desire war instead.

4 Arthur Can Refuse To Help Him

Some of Rains Fall's interactions with Arthur can actually be missed. At the end of "A Rage Unleashed," Dutch will ask Arthur if he is interested in helping Rains Fall. The player can decline the offer, which will lock a few subsequent missions involving the plight of the Wapiti tribe. Accepting will start "Archaeology for Beginners."

In that quest, Arthur will assist Rains Fall with retrieving a sacred artifact important to the Wapiti. The latter can actually gift Arthur an Owl Feather Trinket if the mission's optional objective is completed. The trinket offsets Arthur's core degradation by slowing down its speed by 15%, making it a rather useful reward. Finishing this mission also unlocks the subsequent "Honor, Amongst Thieves" quest, which involves recovering a vaccine for Rains Falls' sick people.

3 He Loses His Last Surviving Son

In the past, Rains Fall had lost many loved ones during the course of his struggle to defend his people. His last surviving son, Eagle Flies, is all that is left of his blood relations. Unfortunately, the relationship between father and son is a bit strained. Eagle Flies disagrees with his father's pacifist attitude and believes the Wapiti should continue an armed struggle.

Eagle Flies ends up paying the ultimate price for his belief in violent opposition. After negotiations break down, Eagle Flies and like-minded members of the tribe lead an attack on the Cornwall oil refinery. Eagle Flies is killed in the attack by Colonel Favours after saving Arthur's life. As a result, Rains Fall ends up losing the remainder of his family.

2 Can Be Encountered One Final Time By John

After the death of Eagle Flies, the plight of the Wapiti people doesn't improve. The U.S. government reneges on its promises to Rains Fall yet again. His people are forced off their reservation in the aftermath of the attack on the oil refinery. Rains Fall leads what is left of his tribe to Canada hoping to find a more hospitable environment out of the reach of the U.S. Army.

In 1907, during the Epilogue sequence, John Marston can encounter Rains Fall one final time. He can be found at the train station in Annesburg waiting to return to Canada. Rains Fall explains that he traveled to America "looking for his son." He then mournfully departs for his new home having lost everything dear to him despite his best efforts.

1 He Is Based On Various Historical Figures

Like other characters in the game, Rains Fall takes historical inspiration from multiple real-life examples. The Wapiti tribe itself is based on several Native American groups who once roamed the Great Plains of the American frontier. The Lakota tribe, for example, is one such analog. The Lakota language itself is even briefly used whenever Rains Fall speaks in his native tongue.

There are a couple of examples that serve as the basis for Rain's Fall's character. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce struggled to lead his people to safety in much the same manner as Rains Fall. Sitting Bull of the Lakota famously resisted attempts by the U.S. government to drive his people from their land. It was a confrontation that culminated famously in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, in which the 7th U.S. Cavalry foolishly picked a fight with a determined foe. Nevertheless, Sitting Bull and his allies were ultimately forced to give up the struggle, mirroring Rains Fall's own predicament in Red Dead Redemption 2.
