This past weekend, an anonymous Reddit user by the name of throwaway11113453 claimed to leak insider information on Rockstar's upcoming projects, particularly as they pertain to Red Dead Redemption 2. The user claimed that Rockstar Games was developing single player DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2 that would involve aliens, playing on the various alien easter eggs found in the main game, but as we now know, the leak was fake.

The same Reddit user has come clean about the Red Dead Redemption 2 alien DLC leak, claiming that they made it up as an experiment involving rumors and their prevalence in video game culture. The user pointed out how their fake Red Dead Redemption 2 alien DLC leak was covered by various outlets, and that they started seeing YouTube videos covering it as well as gaming websites. They ultimately decided to come clean about making up the leak as to not get peoples' hopes up.

Fake video game leaks are nothing new, and have always been part of the industry, even before the Internet. However, it is often difficult to truly tell which video game leaks are fake and which ones are legitimate. For example, there was a Pokemon Sword and Shield leak posted on 4chan that, considering the reputation of the site it was posted on, was largely ignored. But then Nintendo actually confirmed most all of the details in the leak, proving that whoever posted the information had legitimate insider knowledge of the games.

Unfortunately, video game leaks and rumors are fake or exaggerated more often than not, and it appears as though that's what happened here. This also means the leak about a Red Dead Redemption remake was also fake, as that information came from the same Reddit user in the same post.

While this particular Red Dead Redemption 2 DLC leak has turned out to be fake, that doesn't mean Rockstar Games isn't working on story DLC for the game. In fact, there was an audio datamine for Red Dead Redemption 2 that suggested a new playable character could be introduced at some point down the line. In the meantime, fans should take any other leaks with a grain of salt, and wait for official information from Rockstar Games.
