Rockstar Games' delay of Red Dead Redemption 2 could be good news for games like Destiny 2, according to video game retailer GameStop. Both games were initially scheduled to release later this year before the western title was pushed back to 2018.

During a recent earnings call with investors, GameStop executives suggested that games like Red Dead Redemption 2 are expected to "suck some dollars away from the other games." But since the highly anticipated cowboy game has been hit with a delay, the retailer says that it is "not an entire impact when it moves," explaining that "you'll get some of the buyers that would have bought Red Dead buying Call of Duty, or some other games [like] Destiny [2]."

This is part of the reason why GameStop isn't revising its sales forecast either. Executives point to E3 2017 where "you'll see some of the excitement around some of the games that we'll have that will help to share with you why we felt comfortable keeping [guidance] there." With the annual industry event always bringing big announcements and surprises, it's hard to guess all of these exciting new games, but a new Assassin's Creed and other Ubisoft sequels are expected at least.

While GameStop clearly isn't too fussed by Red Dead Redemption 2's delay, those working on games with fall 2017 release dates will also be over the moon. As the retailer noted, a game like Red Dead 2 has the power to distract from all of the others, something which could see even big, blockbuster games left in the dust. Call of Duty may be one massively popular franchise, for instance, but fans have been waiting for Rockstar's open-world cowboy title for almost a decade and it's difficult for other games to compete with that.

In fact, although gamers may be disappointed with Red Dead Redemption 2's delay in the short-term, some will be glad to avoid a repeat of holiday 2016. Games like Dishonored 2 got poor sales, as did open-world hacking game Watch Dogs 2, mech shooter Titanfall 2, and annual franchise release Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. While there were other factors at play there, one of the biggest reasons they all sold badly despite the hype is that they released so closely together and Battlefield 1, which also released around that time, just "sucked" the dollars away from the entire lot.

With Red Dead 2 not out till next year, though, fans have one less game to worry about buying during the holiday period. And as Rockstar polishes its game, the wait may just end up being worth it.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released in spring 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One.
