Red Dead Redemption 2 recently saw a major update for its massive online mode. The July 28 update released with patch notes detailing all the changes, including brand new role.
The role in question players can now choose in Red Dead Redemption 2 is called the Naturalist. The Naturalist role allows players to focus solely on the immense amount of wildlife found throughout the game’s world while earning gold and experience for their efforts.
Becoming a Naturalist
Players who love Red Dead Redemption 2’s world and expansive online mode finally received some good news. Red Dead Online was finally updated after months and months of silence from Rockstar. The major selling point of this new mode, as most players know, is the brand new role of the Naturalist. Like other roles that players can choose to play, the Naturalist has to be purchased after a few prerequisites are met.
The Naturalist role is easy enough to find and purchase. Simply head to the town of Strawberry and visit the Welcome Center. A cutscene will play introducing two brand new characters who will be integral to the player’s new role. After the cutscene players will be able to purchase the Naturalist starter kit for 25 gold bars, which will allow them to begin their new role. Like any role in Red Dead Online, players will earn gold and experience for completing challenges and goals for the Naturalist role, which can be sped along with the Outlaw Pass 3 and its rewards.
Gus and Harriet
As mentioned above, two brand new characters are introduced in this update, being Gus and Harriet, and both offer different benefits. First is Harriet, who is an animal-loving Naturalist that doesn’t like when players kill the animals around the world. In fact, Harriet will punish players for hunting too much before visiting her, though this is mostly played for a gag. Harriet offers Naturalist XP and gives players access to Legendary Animal missions.
Gus on the other hand acts mainly as a hunter. Gus will give players cosmetic items in return for specific animal pelts, so players who want a cosmetic change will want to visit Gus often. Gus will also sell the player various items that will help them in their Naturalist role, such as allowing the player to receive more herbs when scavenging. Gus can be found at various paw print locations around the map.
The Naturalist role is an interesting change for the world of Red Dead Online. Needless to say, players in the Naturalist role will be steering clear of the notable towns and cities around the map in favor of hunting and tracking in the wild. Players will hopefully come to appreciate the beauty of the game’s world even more will playing as a Naturalist.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
