Red Dead Redemption 2 has been an immense hit with fans and newcomers alike, which makes sense given that Red Dead Redemption 2 took eight years to develop with an expansive team. Moreover, the game is so big that players are continuing to discover new things every day in their exploration of its overwhelming map, and one Red Dead Online player has seemingly stumbled upon an apparition leaving a trail in the snow in Colter.
The video below shows the footage of the player catching the supposed ghost. The player indicates they are by the settlement of Colter, which is the first location players explore in the game. The video is about 24 seconds long, so it may be worth watching over a few times to fully understand the bizarre nature of this occurrence.
As can be seen, the player stands in the tall snow near Colter in broad daylight. It appears there is a pre-existing trail here, perhaps made by the invisible being before the footage was recorded. The player tracks the path as it is made by the apparition, and the being travels for quite a while before it disappears out of the player's field of vision.
As odd as it is, some commenters joked and speculated about the situation. Reddit user _chrom_ cited the Harry Potter book series, stating, "Harry is just trying to get to Hogsmeade." This is referring to the Cloak of Invisibility worn by Harry Potter to spy on, and hide from, suspect individuals.
Other commenters suggested that it could be a rabbit that is just concealed in the snow, and based on the depth of the snow, it would make sense for it not to be entirely visible. Alternatively, it could be a glitched creature of some kind that appears invisible due to a bug. Given Red Dead Redemption 2's record of unusual glitches, this wouldn't be too much of a surprise.
If Red Dead Online developer Rockstar was to insert another ghastly Easter egg into the game, some might expect it to be more like the game's spirit train and other spotted phantasms, with a visible, if somewhat transparent, body. While it is certainly possible that the player's discovery is an invisible wandering entity, it could also just be a chilling bug.
Red Dead Online is available now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
