Early last month, the Department of Homeland Security shared a message on its social media page promoting the protection offered by the Border Patrol in an attempt to earn new recruits. However, what the post ended up doing was giving gamers a platform to share some of their favorite Red Dead Redemption 2 memes, and there were a lot of them.

The post itself reads, “All kinds of terrain. One mission. Protect what’s inside our borders. Apply now to become a Border Patrol Agent,” and is fairly innocuous on its own. The intent is seemingly to recruit some new hires to the United States Border Patrol by emphasizing the idea that agents protect US citizens. But in addition to the rousing text, the Dept. of Homeland Security also included a picture of six BP agents on horseback, which then prompted the comparisons to Red Dead Redemption.

Replies on the post ranged from quotes said by Dutch Van der Linde to references to Tahiti, and there is even a Gavin comment thrown in for good measure. It’s all in good fun and there are plenty of Red Dead 2 quotes strewn throughout the post.

Much like God of War and its “Boy” quotes, Red Dead 2 has its fair share of meme-worthy moments. Dutch is a character ripe for memes, if only because of his obsession with the next job being the last. And Arthur’s Western drawl makes almost any line sing. Clearly, there were plenty of memorable lines for players to put on the Border Patrol social media post, and enough fellow gamers recognized them to either throw a ‘Like’ or share their own.

Politics aside, this was a fun opportunity to see gamers share in the cultural zeitgeist of Red Dead Redemption 2 and have a fun laugh. It’s rare to see this cohesive a movement on social media these days.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.
