Spike Chunsoft apparently has a new game on the horizon, thanks to premature listing posted by online retail giant Amazon. Titled Re: Zero – The Prophecy of the Throne, the game is apparently headed for the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite, and the PlayStation 4.

Known for its role-playing and visual novel games, Spike Chunsoft has more recently been bringing western third-party games to Japan and developing titles for popular IPs like Jump Force, One Punch Man, and Pokemon. It was initially assumed that this would be a localization of the 2017 PS4 and PS Vita effort, Re: Zero -Starting Life from Zero- Kiss or Death, from former sister company 5pb. However, based on the synopsis that accompanied the Amazon UK listing, it appears that this title is a completely new game in the series.

The description for Re: Zero – The Prophecy of the Throne reads, “One month after Subaru’s new life in another world began, an emissary sent by the Royal Castle suddenly appears with news that the Royal Selection has been postponed, but offers no reason as to why.” This implies that the story takes place after the events of the first game. While based on the incredibly popular Japanese light novel series, the video game plots have deviated considerably from the novels and anime.

The overview continues to reveal that a sixth candidate has made a claim for the throne, even though the prophecy indicates that there would only be five. This mysterious development and the delayed coronation for the next ruler of Lugunica leads Subaru and his group into action to discover the identity of this impostor. As with most visual novel games, players can likely expect a heavy dose of character interactions and a plethora of branching story lines.

Re: Zero – The Prophecy of the Throne boasts an original story supervised by the novel series author, Tappei Nagatsuki. The game will also feature “brand-new characters designed by the original light novel artist Shinichiro Otsuka as well as your favorites from the series.” It is also noteworthy that this is the first time the visual novel franchise will appear outside of Japan, with English voice-overs and in-game text no less. This is also the series’ debut on a Nintendo console.

There hasn’t been any press release from Spike Chunsoft yet, so the information is hardly concrete at this point. Amazon leaks have proven trustworthy in the past and it seems more a question of when rather if the game gets an official announcement. Then again, as with seemingly everything these days, the coronavirus pandemic could alter the release schedule.

A precise release date for Re: Zero – The Prophecy of the Throne has yet to be revealed, but the game is expected to be available on the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and PS4.
