The feud between Ray Fisher and DC's leadership has been a messy, complicated situation that has left just about everyone feeling sour. While Warner Bros. agreed to conduct an investigation, the relationship continued to degrade until it was finally confirmed that Fisher would no longer be returning as Cyborg in any future DC films. Still, according to Fisher, he would still like to work things out if it means he can return to play the character in the upcoming Flash movie.

It began with the development of Justice League. As Zack Snyder left the project and things were handed over to Joss Whedon, the re-shoots and edits to the film were reportedly a very difficult and strained process, which eventually led to Fisher himself coming out and accusing Whedon of harassments on set. As the calls for accountability from Fisher and fans grew louder, Warner Bros. agreed to an investigation, the terms of which would be set out by Fisher and the Warner Bros. legal team.

Unfortunately, the process did not go smoothly, with Fisher stating publicly that he was unsatisfied with Warner Bros.' Justice League investigation and the studio releasing a vague statement saying that appropriate action had been taken. Fisher was eventually given the boot, and it was confirmed he would not be returning for more DC films. Other reports later came out confirming the stories of a toxic work environment, detailing multiple conflicts between Whedon and several cast members that took place during the re-shoots.

Still, it seems Fisher wouldn't be opposed to playing Cyborg again if something could be worked out. In an interview with Empire, the actor was asked about the upcoming Flash film and what he thought of the project, particularly director Andy Muschietti. In response, the actor praised Muschietti's vision for the material, and said he would be disappointed if they never got to work together: "Andy seems to have his head on straight and understood these characters by making it about the relationship more than just a display of superpowers. We were on the same page about that, and it’ll be a bummer if there is no way to resolve the issue."

While Cyborg's role in the film was never officially clarified, the story the film is based on, Flashpoint, did feature Cyborg in a major role. As a result, it's still unclear whether Fisher would have had a significant presence or if he would have been more of a supporting character, and whether or not the script had to undergo rewrites after he left the project. Perhaps Warner Bros. and Fisher can still find a way to build new bridges, but until then, fans should temper their expectations about who will appear in Ezra Miller's The Flash film.

The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 4, 2022.
