The Ratchet and Clank franchise has evolved quite a bit over the years, though the titular characters have always been consistent. One artistic Ratchet and Clank fan decided to make a significant change to Ratchet, however, as they drew him as a kid.

This is hardly the first time that fans of the franchise have shown off their creativity. For example, to celebrate the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, one fan created a PlayStation 1 case and cover for the game. Another creative fan made a small model of Ratchet’s Omniwrench, with the replica proving to be a big hit with fans of the hero’s signature melee weapon. However, Redditor bluejayjitsuu did an incredible job with their young Lombax fan art, as it turned out just as good as other community creations.

For starters, seeing a young member of the Lombax race is entertaining, and Ratchet is as adorable as it gets. His instantly recognizable ears look even bigger than normal since his head is not fully grown, while his feet look large as well. His tiny tail is also cute, with the red shirt and blue pants giving him a more casual look than fans may be used to. However, the best touch is easily the focused expression on his face. With his brows furrowed and his tongue exposed, it’s clear how intense the game is.

While it would have still been a great piece of art if bluejayjitsuu gave him a controller from an older system or designed a brand-new one, it is fitting that Ratchet is holding a DualSense controller. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is one of the first true PS5 exclusives, with Insomniac taking full advantage of the console’s technology to craft a gorgeous game. It also makes smart use of the DualSense controller, with players accessing different firing modes depending on how hard they press the trigger.

With Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart recently nominated for several Game Awards, this fan art was shared at a perfect time. While it is unclear if it will bring home Game of the Year or any other big awards at the upcoming event, the fact that it was nominated several times shows that the series is as strong today as it was when it made its debut. Given the fact that memorable Ratchet and Clank artwork like this is still being shared, it seems like the fan base is just as strong in 2021 as well.

With over 3,800 upvotes thus far, Ratchet and Clank fans on the official PlayStation subreddit have clearly appreciated the artwork. Though it remains to be seen if any young Lombaxes will be shown in a future Ratchet and Clank game, this artwork does give fans a better idea of how Ratchet may have looked as a kid.
