In honor of Ratchet & Clank’s 20th anniversary, Insomniac Games released a 20th Anniversary Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Armor Pack DLC. The announcement was made alongside the plans to release PlayStation Plus Premium Ratchet & Clank title lineup for later this month.
Originally released in 2002, the Ratchet and Clank series has gone on to become a fan favorite PlayStation exclusive franchise. The game’s original story follows a Lombax mechanic named Ratchet and his sidekick Clank, a defective robot. Together they venture through the universe defeating alien foes and saving galaxies from imminent threats with a number of fantastical and inventive weaponry. Since its release, the franchise has spawned several sequels as well as a 2016 animated feature film.
Luckily, the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart DLC is already available to download via a game update for absolutely no extra cost. It was mentioned in the blog post that the armor sets included in the DLC were inspired by “games through the franchise’s history.” There are five sets total: Commando Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando; Holoflux Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time; Quest Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty; Marauder Armor inspired by Ratchet: Deadlocked, and Clank Armor to “celebrate the greatest of pals.” All titles used for inspiration are included in the PlayStation Plus Premium releases for November 15.
Both announcements were made via a PlayStation Blog post where the developer also walked fans through the history of the franchise, including concept art of characters, weapons, and how the PlayStation 2 was the stepping stone that helped develop the series’ better cutscenes and more. The post ended with a heartfelt love for the series and the latest Ratchet & Clank release, stating it set a “new standard for the franchise: huge spectacles, heartfelt moments, and combat animations that bring you closer to the action and blends our craft with the power of the PlayStation 5 console.” The retrospective is a bonus for fans of the series who are curious to know more about the development process of their fan-favorite nostalgic games.
It’s strange to think that it’s been 20 years since these two quirky characters were introduced to the world. Fans can appreciate this DLC as a way to celebrate the beloved franchise as well as Insomniac Games’ work and dedication put into keeping it new and fresh over the years. It also shows the developer’s appreciation for Ratchet & Clank fans who’ve followed the games along the way through all the adventures across the universe.
