There are some series that have burned bright since their first release, and Ratchet & Clank is one of these. It has always been one of the 3D platformers to beat, especially when it comes to new systems. Sony's purchase of Insomniac Games, the company behind this series and the recent hit Spider-Man game, showed the company's determination to have the series firmly in its pocket.

That said, it has been a while since there's been some ground-shaking Ratchet & Clank news. The last big attempt to shake up the series was a remake in 2016. There have been few whispers of anything new coming to the series... until now.

There was a rumor that the PlayStation 5 launch lineup may contain a Ratchet & Clank game. To make a long story short, that rumor is at least partially true. A new Ratchet & Clank game is coming out for the PS5, and its name is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. There is no release date specified at this time, and the exact plot details are not yet known. There are a few things known though, like that Clank meets a female Lombax (Ratchet's species) from another dimension.

For starters, the game is a definite sequel in the series, unlike the remake and tie-in Ratchet & Clank film four years ago and features a story element tied directly into the gameplay. That element is the eponymous Rifts, which seem to be destroying the game's universe. Appearing randomly through both the footage and the actual gameplay shown, the purple rifts lead Ratchet and his sidekick Clank from one world to another. Jumping rapidly from the familiar, futuristic cities of past games to an alien jungle, to a strange pirate ship, there's a lot to take in.

Ratchet's arsenal of weapons, which has always been a major selling point for the series, has also been updated. New weapons include a garden sprinkler that doubles as a turret and a frighteningly powerful shotgun. The omni-wrench returns as well, despite its less than auspicious call out in the underperforming R&C film. The most intriguing addition to the arsenal is a rip-line that can manipulate yellow Rifts. Ratchet is seen several times pulling at a rift with the line, which immediately teleports him to its location.

There are many unanswered questions. What other functions will the Rift have in the game? Who is the female Lombax, and what is her role in the story? Will Clank wind up teeming up with her in a playable section? What other new weapons will be available? Everyone will have to wait for further news, but there is already a lot to want here. There's a reason Ratchet & Clank has been a must-own for each PlayStation, and odds are it will be the same with the PS5.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be released for the PS5 at an unspecified date.
