When Insomniac Games revealed Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart last year, the studio said the game will be taking full advantage of the PS5's next-gen hardware. Not only is Rift Apart a PS5 exclusive, but it will be using all that the PS5 has to offer for the heroes' latest journey across space and time.

Insomniac previously shared details about how Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be using the PS5's next-gen tech to bring out the best the game has to offer. The game is being developed from the ground up using the PS5's hardware to make the weapons, graphics, and combat crazier than ever, opening up more possibilities for the studio to make the game on a whole new level.

Insomniac has a history of using bizarre weapons in previous games such as the Resistance series, the Sunset Overdrive game, and the Ratchet and Clank series. For the upcoming game, Insomniac's goal is to make the weapon impact feel much more engaging than before. The studios already talked about using the DualSense controller to enhance Rift Apart weapons, and game director Mike Daly expanded on that further in an interview with GamesRadar.

Daly said the studios uses the PS5 to not only make the weapons look cool, but also be more fluid in combat. He noted how the DualSense controller's haptic function makes weapon impacts feel "absolutely amazing" in player's hands, letting players get a real sense for each weapon in their arsenal. Daly adds Rift Apart will use the PS5's SSD to enhance the game's visuals and combat.

Using the PS5's SSD with the new portal jumping ability in Rift Apart will purportedly provide a seamless experience for players while they travel between each world. It will also have near-instant loading screens to make the transitions more seamless. Daly said this will help expand on the game's combat as players jump to different combat spaces through the titular rifts.

This will let Ratchet be faster and more responsive during combat, according to Insomniac, and offers new challenges where players can try out combo chains. Daly said this lets combos feel empowering and expressive in the game, letting Rift Apart's dimension-hopping be an active element in the game. This adds more possibilities to the chaotic combat that Ratchet and Clank series is well known for, and adds more creativity behind the dimension-hopping gameplay in Rift Apart.

Marcus Smith, Insomniac creative director, also told GamesRadar the PS5's hardware provides the studios more possibilities than before. Whether it's graphics, weapons, combat, or working without loading screens, Insomniac is building Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to celebrate the franchise and move it forward in 2021.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart launches in early 2021 exclusively for PS5.
