Stardew Valley is a massive game, especially considering it's mostly made by one person. Every content update has big, game-changing additions. But there's no lack of tiny details either. Little things are what make the game feel so immersive. A handful of these can't be sought out - they rely on chance or very specific circumstances.

These rare events and secrets don't really affect gameplay in Stardew Valley, but that's not the point. They're rewards for players who play for a long time or think outside the box. And some of them are surprisingly unnerving for such a light-hearted game.

Updated on September 29, 2021, by Anastasia Maillot: Stardew Valley's relaxing gameplay leaves a lot of room for cool little secrets, easter eggs and rare, hidden events. And sure enough, the Concerned Ape hasn't skimped on little rare events that are sprinkled throughout the game like little gems of humor.

By now, it's likely that players have discovered most of what can happen in the game. That said, some newcomers may have not had the chance of experiencing some of the rare events and random interactions that occur only when the stars are aligned in Stardew Valley.

11 Placing Lewis' Golden Statue In Town

Stardew Valley Solid Gold Lewis Statue In The Middle Of Town Square

One of the many secret notes the player finds during their adventures will lead them to a hidden solid gold statue of Lewis behind one of the houses in Pelican Town. The gold statue is purely decorative, depicting Lewis, the town mayor himself in all of his glory.

Players can choose to keep this statue on their farm, or, in order to see a super rare event, they can place the statue down in Pelican Town for a hilarious reaction from the angered mayor himself. The statue will be gone the next day, replaced with rotten plants. The player will also receive a message from Lewis through the mail.

10 The Witch

Stardew Valley Witch

The Witch in Stardew Valley has a surprising amount of lore to her. Through Rasmodius, players find out that she's actually his ex-wife, and lives in a swamp north of Pelican Town. The Witch is never at home when the player visits, but she might visit the player's farm if they get lucky enough.

At night, there's a 1% chance the Witch will appear and fly over either a coop or a slime hutch. Her magic will either spawn a Void Egg which can be incubated into a Void Chicken, or it will turn a random slime into a black slime. It's also possible for her to leave a golden egg in a coop instead of a Void Egg, but only if the player has achieved 100% perfection in the game.

9 The Crop Fairy

Crop fairy

The Crop Fairy is probably considered the opposite of the Witch. Her magic is light magic and is another random and rare event that can happen during the night. Some conditions have to be met, however: it has to not be winter, and there must be ungrown crops (not Wild Seeds) available for her to use her magic on.

Crops affected by her magic will be fully grown the next day. The area affected is a 5 by 5 tile area. Her appearance is extremely rare, and only has a 1% chance of happening. However, when it does, it's a huge boon for farmers who are only just starting their journey in the game.

8 Squirrel Figurine

Stardew Valley Squirrel Figurine

There's no element of chance involved in the Squirrel Figurine. It's just so out of the way that most won't ever find it on their own. When entering the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island, players will have to cross a river of lava. Instead of going to the other side, use the Watering Can to head down the stream to the left. Players will eventually come to a secret exit.

The exit leads back outside, to a bank on the river. There's seemingly nothing to do here. But, if the farmer goes fishing in the leftmost part of the river - near the edge of the map - they will eventually catch the rare Squirrel Figurine.

7 Stone Owl

Stardew Valley 269733094 seed

The Stone Owl is a random event. Every night, there is a 0.5% chance the statue will appear on the farm, provided there is an empty space for it. Players will know when it happens by the owl sound effect that plays after bed. The event can trigger multiple times in the same save file.

The statue is a bit spooky, but rest assured that it doesn't harm the player. It doesn't do anything to help, either. The Stone Owl is just for decoration's sake. Don't confuse it with the Stone Owl sold at the Night Market. They have the same name but look completely different.

6 Green Sea Creature

Stardew Valley Sea Creature

It's no secret that merpeople live in the Gem Sea. The Wizard mentions them at one point. One of them is in a boat at the Night Market. Another one lounges near Pirate Cove on rainy days. They all look like the typical fairytale mermaids. But there's a bit more gruesome creature lurking in the ocean that most will never see.

There is a very rare chance that a green, Creature From The Black Lagoon-esque beastie will poke its head through the waves near the docks at the Beach. It will only appear in open water tiles that have a clear path to the bottom of the map. The spawn chance is about 0.06% per second.

5 Marnie and Lewis

Stardew Valley Marnie Secret Text

The nature of Marnie and Lewis's relationship is one of the game's biggest subplots. It's hard to ignore, especially when the player has to retrieve Lewis's purple shorts from Marnie's bedroom. There are still many tiny details sprinkled throughout the game, including a very rare line of text.

When entering Marnie's shop, there's a small chance the above dialogue will appear, implying she was waiting for Lewis. There's an even rarer bit of dialogue to unlock from this — a 0.01% chance for her to say "... When the door opened, I thought it might be Lewis." How scandalous.

4 The UFO

Stardew Valley UFO

The rarest event in Stardew Valley in terms of percentage chance. If it isn't the 28th of the month and there isn't rain, there is a very small chance a UFO will appear on the shipping screen. How small? It's a 0.001% chance. That's 1 in 100,000 nights it'll appear.

The UFO doesn't do anything, but it feels good to see something so rare, doesn't it? This isn't the only instance of alien sightings in the valley. According to one of the Lost Books, the Dwarf could be a descendant of an extraterrestrial race that crash-landed on Earth. And, of course, there's the fellow who lives inside the E on the title screen.

3 Iridium Krobus

Stardew Valley Iridium Krobus

Like the Squirrel Figurine, this is another secret furniture item acquired through fishing. This majestic statue of Krobus is even harder to find. Fishing near the outdoor entrance of the Sewers will yield the item, on one condition — the player has to have Level 15 Fishing. As players may know, the skill maxes out at 10.

How on earth does one get Level 15? The trick is to cook a specific recipe. Use Qi Seasoning while cooking Seafoam Pudding and the resulting dish will boost Fishing by 5. A Level 10 Fishing player who eats the Pudding and maxes out the cast on an Iridium Rod should be able to reach the ocean with their line.

2 Strange Capsule

Stardew Valley Strange Creature

The Strange Capsule is a furniture item that works similarly to the Stone Owl. After the first year, there's a chance it will appear on the farm overnight. There's something more to this one, though. After three days, the Strange Capsule will break, and whatever was inside vanishes.

Players must keep their eyes peeled — after the Capsule breaks, there's a 1% chance a strange creature will appear at the Bus Stop or in Pelican Town. It will scamper between the bushes or wave towards the player. Players can't interact with the creature in any way, and it only shows itself at night. Are the aliens behind this? Perhaps we'll never know.

1 Haunted Doll

Stardew Valley Doll Event

The 1.1 update added the ability to "dismiss" children at the Witch's Hut. Offering a Prismatic Shard to the shrine turns them into doves, never to be seen again. This doesn't affect the player's relationship with their spouse, but there are some darker consequences. The player might receive spooky phone calls or see doves in flight at the Summit.

The scariest event of all only happens on Fall 26. If the player watches TV, they'll get the chilling message shown above. An Ancient Doll pops out of the screen. After that, the Doll will fly around the Witch's Hut and attack the player when they come close. When defeated, the doll turns into a bird and flies away. Maybe start hanging some symbols of Yoba around the house.

Stardew Valley was released on February 26, 2021, and is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and PlayStation Vita.
