Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege has proven to be a rather lucrative game for Ubisoft, having maintained a strong active player base in the years since its release. The publisher is looking to further improve those numbers by releasing the game in China, and as a result, the game will soon go through a few aesthetic changes.

In a blog post uploaded on Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six website, the publisher stated that certain references to traditionally controversial topics, such as violence, gambling, blood, and sexual content will be removed from the Year 3 Season 4 (Y3S4) build of the game. It was also indicated that none of these changes will affect gameplay.

The reason Ubisoft has provided for the upcoming aesthetic changes is to make Rainbow Six Siege compliant with the laws within China. While the publisher did state that it would be possible to make two separate builds of the game, it was suggested in the blog post that maintaining only one build would make it easier to streamline content to all players in the quickest manner possible. However, there has been some debate over this whole assertion after a community manager for the game later suggested in a Reddit thread discussing the changes that China may be getting its own build of the game anyway and that players based in other markets would not be able to access it.

Ubisoft has provided some examples of the upcoming changes in their blog post, but this has not stopped the news from being greeted with some criticism. Some users have stated that it’s not the fact that the game has changed that is upsetting but rather the reason for the change, and the idea that China’s content censorship laws will now be affecting a global audience.

Whether or not Ubisoft will refrain from instituting changes in the build of Rainbow Six Siege made for audiences outside of China remains to be seen. The publisher has previously implemented measures that have proven unpopular with the game’s community, but the title has still kept a strong active player base.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
