Almost everyone can get into a spooky mood around Halloween time, and it seems that the Rainbow Six Siege developers are no different. The new Doktor’s Curse event is currently live in game, offering cosmetics, a new game mode, and a spooky flair to the game’s menu and music. In this event, the developers have outdone themselves in their quest to create a magnificently creepy experience for their players.

This time around, the developers have really gone all out to create a totally new game mode and fully-realized map changes to create a truly spooky version of the game. Over time, the seasonal events in Rainbow Six Siege have gotten more and more intricate, culminating in what is likely the most intense, fun, and well-crafted event players have yet seen.

Past Events

Ever since the surprisingly different Outbreak event, the Rainbow 6 developers have been toying with smaller scale seasonal events. The first seasonal event to make good on the promise of more events in Rainbow Six was a Halloween event, which took place during October of last year. However, it was nothing compared to what seasonal events have become.

The Mad House event of yesteryear had special limited time premium cosmetics and a new game mode, but it was clearly a trial run of the concept. Its “new” game mode was simply a casual game locked to a set few operators who had spooky costumes. This event was actually quite mad indeed, because House was already one of the most unbalanced (yet still fun) maps in the game, with the addition of a dark foggy theme that made it almost impossible to see enemies through the gloom.

The Mad House event did get enough positive feedback, and purchases of premium R6 cosmetics, to inspire Ubisoft to continue trying out special game modes, though.

The next seasonal event took place during the week of April Fools in 2019, and was titled Rainbow is Magic. It upped the ante from the previous Halloween event by completely overhauling the Presidential Plane map to look like a cutesy toy version of a toy airplane. The exterior skybox of the original Plane map was even changed to look like the Kids’ Bedroom area in House. The event was yet again a normal casual match with a few set operators who had special limited cosmetics. This time, however, the level of detail in the cosmetics and altered map was much higher, replete special voice lines and totally overhauled sound and visual effects.

The first instance of a seasonal event that drastically changed the way that the game was played was the Showdown event from July 2nd to July 16th of 2019. This event featured an entirely new wild-west themed map built around a completely changed game mode. Instead of the regular 5v5, this event was a 3v3 mode with no HUD, no drone phase, and 90-second rounds. All of the operators were limited to the two-shot BOSG slug shotgun and a six-round revolver, with no weapon attachments. This event also included special cosmetics, but the star of the show was the completely new game mode that was far more than just a re-skinned version of a normal casual match.

Doktor's Curse

This time around, the Doktor’s Curse event is on an entirely new level. The theme of re-skinning a generally accepted “bad” map has continued, with an even spookier version of the much-maligned Theme Park map. This map has been scheduled for a rework during Operation Ember Rise, but the original version has reached its full potential in this new Halloween event. A team of attackers equipped with nothing but sledgehammers and the most oppressive tracking gadgets in the game is pitted against a team of trap-based operators. The defenders get no normal weapons, but have their traps and a limited ability to turn invisible and gain speed boost for a short time.

This results in a thrilling, surprisingly balanced form of hide-and-seek, with slow defenders fleeing from fast, dangerous attackers who can track footsteps, launch motion-sensing drones, and detect heartbeats through walls. However, the attackers must look out for deadly bear traps, explosives rigged to doors, invisible poison needles, and toxic smoke.

This all takes place in a spooky haunted Theme Park filled with dark corners and confusing halls. An animatronic Doc can seen raising Bandit from the dead Frankenstein style, and the music, special announcer lines, and sound effects make the entire mode a treat. In previous events, many people would play a few rounds and go back to the normal game, but this time around the queues for Doktor’s Castle are lively and filled with players figuring out the best strategies for scaring each-other to death.

None of this is to mention the special cosmetics, which are worthy of praise this time around and have made many people excited to see what will be available in the upcoming Battle Pass. The number of available cosmetics, as well as their quality, is much higher than previous events. This can only lead players to look forward to more events to come down the line.

The Rainbow Six Siege Doktor's Curse event is now live on PC, PS4, and Xbox One and will run until November 6, 2019.
