As many gamers would likely attest, Rage 2 is one of the most anticipated games of 2019, with those looking forward to the title from id Software and Avalanche Studios undoubtedly being eager to dive into its colorful and chaotic open world. That said, some players have been wondering what kind of online requirements might be needed in order to experience the title on consoles, and it looks like the team behind Rage 2 wants to clear the air on the matter.
According to a recent exchange between a fan and the official Twitter account for Rage 2, players will not need to subscribe to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold in order to play the forthcoming first-person shooter. This much was shared after it was discovered Amazon had listed that the game on Xbox One requires Xbox Live Gold, and that its PS4 version would need one to be a PS Plus member to play Rage 2. Apparently, though, this specific information on the product page's listing was made in error.
For those unaware, Rage 2 is set to be a single-player experience, with one assuming the role of the last ranger named Walker, who must survive in the game's dangerous open world inhabited by mutants and raiders after it was hit by an asteroid. With Rage 2 having been designed as a solo experience, it's safe to presume many would have been disappointed if they needed online subscriptions to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold to dive into the title's content.
While the first-person shooter has been billed as a single-player game, a job listing from a while back potentially indicated that Avalanche Studios could have been considering the incorporation of multiplayer for Rage 2. As it so happens, the position sought applicants who could “lead the multiplayer development of [Avalanche's] newest open world / sandbox multiplayer game,” with the implication having been that the studio was referring to Rage 2.
Hey! Looks like an error. You don't need Xbox Live Gold or PS Plus to play #RAGE2. We'll make sure the product page is updated. Thanks for letting us know!— RAGE 2 (@rage) April 8, 2019
All things considered, some players looking forward to Rage 2 may breathe a sigh of relief knowing that PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold are not going to be required to play the game. And with the game set to launch a little more than a month from now, it will be interesting to see how those fans will respond to the title itself.
Rage 2 is set to launch on May 14, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
