Earlier this month, Bethesda officially announced Rage 2. A shooter from Avalanche Studios and id Software, an over the top gameplay trailer confirmed that the game will feature huge, extravagant action sequences, a variety of heavy weaponry, and plenty of vehicles to zip around in (or use to mow down enemies). While the trailer gave fans a brief overview of what to expect, there are plenty of gameplay features yet to be fully detailed, and one of these may include multiplayer.

The speculation that Rage 2 will feature multiplayer gameplay comes from a recent job listing posted by Avalanche Studios. The developer is currently looking for a senior multiplayer programmer to join its ranks, in order to "lead the multiplayer development of our newest open world / sandbox multiplayer game."

The hired candidate will help the developer brings the worlds in its "next set of titles" to life with multiplayer environments, explains the listing. With Rage 2 being pitched as an open-world and sandbox game, the implication is that it will be one of the Avalanche-developed titles to feature multiplayer gameplay.

This job listing isn't the only reason that Rage fans have to think that Rage 2 will feature some sort of multiplayer component, however. When the gameplay trailer debuted, many were quick to point out one specific scene (pictured above) in which a group of characters appear to be teamed up to take down a hulking robot enemy. It is unclear whether the scene was just an example of the huge battles that players can expect and whether those characters were AI-controlled allies of the player character. But some viewers have wondered whether it was included as an indication that players will be able to team up with their friends.

As mentioned, there are plenty of aspects of Rage 2 that have yet to be detailed. For example, when Avalanche Studios confirmed that the game would not feature loot boxes, the developer also teased some post-launch content, but it's unclear what that content may look like.

Rage 2 is expected to feature during the Bethesda E3 2018 press conference, where Avalanche Studios, id Software, and publisher Bethesda will have ample opportunity to shed more light on the game. Fans hoping to take on the game's wasteland with their friends will have their fingers crossed that multiplayer gameplay is one such feature that will be confirmed.

Rage 2 is set to launch in 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
