Rage 2 is set to launch early next week, and like most modern video game releases, it will have multiple editions for fans to choose from. Besides the base game of Rage 2, there will also be a Deluxe Edition as well as a Collector's Edition, and as it turns out, those versions of the game will be the only way fans can get the BFG 9000 at launch.

It was revealed last year that the BFG 9000 weapon from Doom would be in Rage 2, where it was confirmed to be part of the Rage 2 Deluxe and Collector's Editions. However, it seems some fans were under the impression that the BFG 9000 would still be obtainable in the base game of Rage 2, though it's now been clarified that isn't the case.

In a Reddit thread about the Rage 2 BFG 9000, a Bethesda Community Manager confirmed that the weapon will only be available in the Deluxe and Collector's Editions at launch. While this leaves the door open for the BFG 9000 to come to the Rage 2 base game at some point down the road, it has still upset some fans of the game, who voiced their displeasure on the Reddit thread.

Reddit user PatientZeroo said, " $20 extra bucks for a weapon? Welp there goes my purchase. That’s just pure greed. Very disappointing but not surprising considering who the publisher is." Reddit user the_catacombs generally concurred with this assessment, saying, "This is a boneheaded decision."

While it seems as though many people are upset that the Rage 2 BFG 9000 will only be available in the base game, others have spoken in defense of the game. They point out that the BFG 9000 is a "bonus" weapon from the Doom universe, and that there is other content coming in the Deluxe and Collector's Editions besides the gun. For example, those that get the Collector's Edition will also get the Rise of the Ghosts expansion as well as the Wasteland Wizard cheat codes.

Bethesda has had to deal with a lot of PR issues lately, largely thanks to its mishandling of Fallout 76, so it will be interesting to see if it does anything to try to appease those upset by the Rage 2 BFG 9000 situation. It's doubtful since we're so close to launch, but at least it seems like there are plans to add the BFG 9000 to the Rage 2 base game at some point in the future.

Rage 2 will launch on May 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
