After the conclusion of the first part of Miles Morales’ story, the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film seems to have wrapped up a majority of the loose endings in a pretty tight bow. By the time the movie is over, Miles’ father, Officer Davis, finally views Spider-Man as a hero rather than a criminal, Kingpin has been defeated and turned over to the authorities, and all the other Spider-Folks have been returned home safely to keep the peace within their own respective worlds.

Viewers see that Miles has received enough training to be the official protector of his world and defeating his first villain means Miles gets to return to his life as a normal web-slinging, building-jumping teenager until the next big bad crawls out of hiding. Initially, it appears as if all is well across the Spider-Verse.

Upon taking a closer look, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse left fans with some questions, despite the relative finality present at the end of the movie. For starters, the film closes with a conversation taking place between Miles and Gwen as they defy the rules of the multiverse and speak through what appears to be an interdimensional portal. Neither Gwen nor Miles seem surprised about being contacted by the other, meaning it’s possible that the events of the film’s ending take place days, or even months, after the battle with Kingpin.

This leaves some gray areas in the already complex Spider-verse timeline and it’s difficult for fans to understand how Gwen managed to find a way to speak with Miles, even though they come from entirely different universes. More importantly, how much of an impact will opening an interdimensional portal have on their worlds?

As viewers saw while watching the movie, spending too much time in an alternate dimension can cause a person’s cells to deteriorate, even if they are genetically altered superheroes. Peter B. Parker was the first victim of cell deterioration, as he began experiencing “glitches'' the longer he stayed in Miles’ world. Kingpin’s weapon took the concept of cell deterioration to the max, resulting in the near-catastrophic downfall of an entire city. Clearly, messing with the balance of time and space can have dangerous consequences, so the Into the Spider-Verse sequel needs to explain how Miles and Gwen are able to communicate without putting themselves, or their worlds, in danger.

Now that fans know Miles and Gwen were able to stay in contact, the question of whether or not Miles still speaks with the rest of his team comes to light. As of right now, Marvel hasn’t said much about which characters will be returning for the sequel, but the possibility of Miles being able to speak with Peter B. Parker, Spider-Ham, Peni, and Noir makes their return much more fathomable.

When Peter B. Parker went home, he made the promise to himself and Miles to patch things up with his ex-wife, leaving his fate up in the air. By bringing back the original Spider-Man team, the Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be able to provide fans with a follow-up on Peter B. and Mary Jane’s failed romance, comic relief through Peter Porker’s antics, and see whether or not Spider Noir has finally mastered the colorful challenge of the Rubik’s Cube.

The relationship between Miles and his father is another important aspect that the Into the Spider-Verse sequel needs to explore in more depth. Throughout the film, their relationship was strained by the fact that Miles had to hide his hero identity from his father. Needless to say, Miles’ father was oblivious to the fact that his son is actually Spider-Man, and even though Officer Davis now thinks of Spider-Man as a hero, he still hasn’t been given the chance to reconcile with Miles. The next installment of the Into the Spider-Verse franchise needs to give the father-son duo the quality time they deserve and should highlight how Officer Davis’ newfound partnership with Spider-man will influence his connection with Miles.

Additionally, the Spider-Verse sequel should allow the Morales family more time to cope with the loss of Uncle Aaron. Aside from Officer Davis going to Miles’ room to speak with his son after the incident, the characters had little time to process the unexpected death of a beloved family member. Miles was particularly close to Aaron and was the one who witnessed him dying after exposing him as the Prowler, which is bound to be a traumatic experience for a young boy. It’s hard to believe that Miles and Officer Davis will be able to move on so quickly and there has to be some lasting effects on Miles in particular.

One of Marvel’s biggest strengths is exploring the humanity within their characters, and Miles Morales should be no exception. Taking time to focus more on his personal relationships and his growth as a person, rather than a hero, are things that would help make the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel a great success.
