While Quantic Dream, developer behind the revolutionary Heavy Rain, had once indicated that they might be looking forward to a multi-platform future, that apparently won’t be happening any time soon.
David Cage, CEO of Quantic Dream, acknowledges just how big a risk helping publish Heavy Rain was for Sony, and in a way, vows to repay the publisher with loyalty.
Known for fresh and exciting titles like 2005’s Indigo Prophecy, Quantic Dream isn’t necessarily adverse to venturing into Microsoft’s console realm, but first the developer would like to pay its respects where due.
For a lot of people Heavy Rain almost seemed like a “non-game.” As it turned out, its blend of compelling storytelling with new and interesting gameplay mechanics made for an experience that will stand out for a long time to come.
As Cage explains it, Sony was with the team from day one on the idea, and he therefore feels the need to remain loyal.
“We have an exclusive relationship with Sony. The relationship on Heavy Rain has been fantastic. They trusted us from day one, supported us all the way through. It was really a very risky project [for them] and they never let us down…I am very loyal in general – or I try to be. I know that trusting me is always a big risk and when people do, I feel like I owe them something. It’s not just because I want to thank them, though. We have a relationship that works, we’re excited by the platform – we think it’s the best platform out there. We’re glad to continue to work this way.”
It is rather hard to imagine Heavy Rain existing on any other console, especially with PlayStation Move support taken into consideration. Furthermore, Cage spoke about working with the other internalized Sony studios, like Media Molecule and Guerrilla, and how they like to discuss tech ideas, among other things.
“We talk to Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Guerrilla, Media Molecule – all these great studios. We talk about technology, best practice, how we do things – we share experience and expertise. I think that’s of real value for everybody.”
Moving forward, Quantic Dream is going to have a ton of attention placed on their next title, whatever that may be. With a clear publisher in mind, and one that they are happy to have a relationship with to boot, perhaps Heavy Rain was just the beginning of some truly revolutionary games.
