Developer id Software has a lot of pedigree and legacy behind it. Since the 90s, some fan-favorite franchises have been released and are still supported to this day. Games like the critically acclaimed Doom Eternal show that id Software is still capable of delivering a great first-person shooter experience. While Doom has had a lot of love in recent years, the same has not been given to one of the other franchises id Software was built on, Quake. However, a rumor has recently popped up regarding a possible reboot for the franchise.

The rumor was covered on The XboxEra Podcast by insider Shpeshal Nick, who covered its developers, genre, and possible protagonist. He notes that he received a Discord message detailing this new Quake game that will allegedly not be only developed by id Software, but will be assisted by MachineGames. The latter company was responsible for rebooting the Wolfenstein series, starting with Wolfenstein: The New Order. Shpeshal Nick goes on to report the game will be both a single-player and multiplayer affair.

The bigger bombshell dropped was that this reboot will allegedly feature a female protagonist. This is not the first time that one of id Software's games had this proposition. Doom Eternal had a female Slayer in consideration during its development, so it's possible this idea is coming back into fruition. As the Quake series' Ranger isn't as well defined of a protagonist as the Doom Slayer or B.J. Blazkowicz, it would be an interesting idea to say the least.

There were a few Easter eggs spotted in Doom Eternal that referenced the long history of id Software games, including Quake. Quake fans have had only one recent title from id Software in Quake Champions, an FPS arena-shooter released in 2017. While multiplayer fans have gotten their fix from this, many had hoped that thanks to the success of the Doom reboots, a rebooted single-player experience could be given to Quake too.

With the QuakeCon digital event happening this August, the possibility is on the table that a Quake reboot could be featured. However, no release date was given in the message that Nick received, so the amount of development time already passed for this rumored game is unknown. Until then, this is merely speculation, and time will tell if Quake will get a single-player experience to shine alongside its franchise sibling.

A Quake reboot is rumored to be in development.
