Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 was the biggest puzzle game release of holiday 2020, launching across consoles. It's a meeting of what some consider to be two of the best puzzle game franchises ever made, with Puyo Puyo having over 25 games released in the past 30 years and Tetris being the iconic block arranging game that it is. Now Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is adding another iconic element to its mix, as Thursday morning Sega confirmed that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will be receiving some unique Sonic the Hedgehog content.
Sonic the Hedgehog will be released today as one of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2's playable characters. Players will see Sonic doing fun animations and offering voiced quips when players complete Tetrises and combinations in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Also included in the update are 20 new avatars, which includes not just Sonic but other Sonic game characters, too. The list of characters features Dr. Robotnik, Shadow the Hedgehog, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and even Metal Sonic.
Today's Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 update also offers a variety of other free content for players. Three classic Puyo Puyo characters, Lidelle, Ms. Accord, and Ocean Prince, are now in the game alongside Sonic. Co-op boss raids are also being added, allowing friends to team up and take on powerful bosses. Lastly, four new songs have been added to the game, including the Sonic classic Tropical Resort – Act 1.
Sega promises that this isn't the end of its free content plans for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, too. Players should expect to see more content rollout for the puzzle game in the months to come. And with the reveal of Sonic as a playable character, who knows what will be released in the game next.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is available now on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, with a PC release currently in development.
