Through the breakout success of games such as Hatoful Boyfriend and Dream Daddy, dating games have been taking the scene by storm. Now, Bossa Games has announced it is stepping into the ring. The studio behind the likes of I am Bread and Surgeon Simulator has announced that it is giving publishing support to a cat-based dating title called Purrfect Date.

The game, which is being developed by UK development duo Bae Team and will release for iOS, Mac, and PC, looks to blend together a number of different tones and gameplay styles. Purrfect Date will apparently mix up the dating sim mechanics with those of a visual novel, with a big helping of dark British comedy thrown in along the way.

What makes Purrfect Date stand out is the fact that players will be romancing talking cats. The title puts the player into the role of a number of new research assistants on a feline-populated island, and will task these assistants with investigating the history of the island alongside romancing the talking cats that inhabit it. Those interested in the game can see the trailer below.

According to Ruby-Mae Roberts, co-founder of developer Bae Team, Purrfect Date was the answer to the question of what the duo wanted from an ideal game.

Oliver and I were lazing around one day, itching to play a game, but nothing really grabbed our interest, so we started talking about what we’d do if we could make the ideal game for us. Cats, intrigue, dating sims, the TV show Lost… all of these things became the ingredients that went into making Purrfect Date. It’s an amalgamation of everything we love, and in essence, a love letter to each other (and cats).

It's certainly an intriguing concept, and it's easy to see why such a game would gain the interest of the likes of Bossa Studios. After all, Bossa is a developer renowned for oddball ideas, and so a studio that made Surgeon Simulator DLC to operate on Donald Trump is undoubtedly a good fit to help with the publishing of such a game.

There's still a bit of time to go until Purrfect Date sees release, however, with the game not due to launch until this winter. In the meantime, then, there's still plenty of time to work through Dream Daddy.

Purrfect Date releases in winter 2017 for iOS, Mac, and PC.
