PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, also known as PUBG, has a new map on the way that is being teased through mysterious packages and odd letters shipped to various individuals. The game is promoting its new map through hints provided by the packages, and "Paramo" currently seems likely to be the battle royale location's name.

One source of the existence of PUBG’s new map is the PlayerIGN Twitter account. Reportedly, various community members for the game received mysterious crates with several props to fuel the mystery of its new map. This use of building mysteries to help promote a game was also used by Call of Duty through a cryptic trailer clue hunt for Black Ops Cold War.

The crates themselves were shown to have been shipped with certain objects. These include an odd letter written from an in-game researcher that references a dig-site called “Paramo,” as well as pieces of a stone tablet. The letter directly states the tablet was smashed to be delivered, and if the recipients decode the secrets of the broken pieces, they will unravel the backstory behind the “new map for Season 9.”

The promotion for this new map is drawing on community involvement to get players interested. It is also similar to how players recently decoded a message in God of War's Ragnarok teaser trailer. Hidden messages, secret clues, and new reveals are always a plus for generating player interest in a game or new addition to it.

PUBG recently added a new Ranked Solo Mode for players to bide their time. Now, the developers will be using secret game marketing tactics by giving players a mystery to solve before the next add-on is available to them.

Ranked Solo Mode was not the only new addition developers released this month. A new Arena Mode that was added to PUBG following a number of leaks and rumors prior to the announcement. Unlike that reveal, this time it is clearly designed with the purpose of building anticipation for a new map coming in Season 9.

There is no confirmation that Paramo is the name of the map, but it is a place of significance within the locale so that name has stuck for simplicity sake. Paramo is described as a mountainous tropical region in South America, making that a possible candidate for where the new map’s location may be. Alongside PUBG’s recent patches and updates, this new mystery should spark intrigue for the game's new map, whether it will be called Paramo or not.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
