PUBG Studio's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and PUBG Mobile may be developed separately, but both versions consistently get updated with new content. With the V1.2 update for PUBG Mobile, players can unlock superpowers.

Since PUBG Mobile was released in 2018, millions of players have downloaded the game to their mobile devices. Even though the developers occasionally purge millions of PUBG Mobile accounts for cheating, the game still has a massive player base. The battle royale keeps updating, giving fans content, such as the recent Frost Festival holiday event.

In the V1.2 update for the game, PUBG Studio added the Runic Power Mode. This mode gives players special powers, which are eerily reminiscent of the magical gauntlet-based battle royale, Spellbreak. In any case, after choosing to play on the Erangel map, players will get to choose between three different Rune types. The choice is between an Arctic Rune, a Wind Rune, and a Flame Rune. Each Rune will bestow two special skills to the player, with the first skill summoning an object, and the second skill giving a boost.

The Arctic Rune lets players summon a 3x3 wall of ice blocks, and the boost gives them Freezing Ammo which will reduce healing effectiveness on hit enemies. The Wind Rune lets players summon a protective wind bubble that reduces bullet damage, and the boost increases reload speed and movement speed. The Flame Rune lets players summon a magma wheel that rolls forward and damages enemies, and the boost gives them Scorching Ammo that burns enemies with damage over time.

It is interesting that magic is being introduced to the PUBG universe. According to the Runic Power Mode description, it is “ancient runes from another world” that players use to get their magical powers. Perhaps this is sowing the seeds for how the upcoming sci-fi game The Callisto Protocol ties into the PUBG universe. Either way, players get to play the new mode through March 7, 2021.

Along with the new superpowers, V1.2 brings new firearms, other new game modes, and game performance improvements. Also, on January 17, the Royale Pass Season 17 will be added to PUBG Mobile.

PUBG Mobile is available now on Android and iOS devices.
