Given the success of Fortnite and the Epic Games Store, Epic Games' momentum seems all but unstoppable. Today's news shows that Epic is only just getting started, as Rocket League developer Psyonix has announced that it's being acquired by Epic Games. Official details regarding Psyonix's acquisition, including how much the studio was sold for, are as-yet-unavailable but Rocket League itself will not be changing.

The first and most obvious question regarding Epic's acquisition of Rocket League is bound to overshadow news of the acquisition in general. Rocket League is confirmed to be offered on the Epic Games Store later this year. Epic has implied that it will be pulling Rocket League from sale on Steam at the same time. Worst case scenario, the game will continue to be supported for those who have purchased Rocket League on Steam, but new players may have to find the game on the Epic Games Store.

Psyonix provided a lengthy statement regarding the acquisition. And while the company didn't lend any insight into why it decided to sell the company, it did do its best to talk about the future. At Epic, Psyonix will remain the same team as it always has. It will continue to support Rocket League with new features and content. Long-term, the team hopes to, "grow the game in ways we couldn't do on our own, before." It also sees positives with regards to the game's eSports potential.

Epic provided some context into its acquisition of Psyonix, noting that it has "great respect" for the studio, its game, and the game's community. Given Rocket League's always-online nature, its impressive player retention despite nearing four years of release, and its robust cross-platform support, Epic's targeting of Psyonix is more than understandable.

Epic continues to rapidly expand following the success of Fortnite. Psyonix's acquisition, which is planned to officially complete in late May or early June, marks the first such effort on Epic's part. It shows that not only is the company comfortable purchasing exclusivity for certain games, but it's also willing to acquire studios that will help the company and its Epic Games Store platform grow into the future. Rocket League itself is unlikely to change, but don't doubt that this move will still be met with controversy given the current online attitude towards Epic.

Rocket League is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
