After years of requests, Double Fine will finally be giving fans the opportunity to make Psychonauts 2 a reality through the crowd-funding website Fig.

It's no secret that a sequel to the cult-classic Psychonauts has been something that many gamers have been demanding for years. While many had given up hope for seeing a Psychonauts 2 ever materialize, game developer Double Fine shocked everyone at the 2015 Game Awards by showing off a trailer that displayed just that – but there's a bit of a catch.

In order for Psychonauts 2 to see the light of day, gamers will have to fund it themselves. Opting to forego KickStarter in favor of the the Tim Schaffer-backed Fig platform, fans can virtually lob their cash at the project in order to bring it to PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. In the end, Double Fine is looking to raise $3,300,000 USD to make the project a reality.

As of this writing, the studio has amassed $297,215 USD of its initial goal. Suffice it to say, the bar appears to moving up rather quickly, which makes sense given how much demand there has been for a true-to-life followup to the original Psychonauts title.

While little is known about the plot for the new game at this point in time, it looks like Raz and his ragtag squad of camp councillors and cohorts will be making their return. It should also be noted that they appear to be working together in a much more professional setting than the debut game, with the team being summoned to deal with a psychedelic, military-grade emergency.

According to the official Fig page for Psychonauts 2, users will access their missions through a hub world that will transport them to their destinations in a similar fashion to the original game. It's certainly staying true to the original layout, but it'll be interesting to see how the series evolves if and when it finally arrives on current-gen hardware.

Given the prominence of crowd-backing platforms as of late, especially with spiritual successors such as Yooka-Laylee and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, it's not all that surprising to see more major industry vets submitting projects of this scale for mass funding. Heck, even Shenmue 3 looked for backing through its long dormant fan base and became KickStarter's most successful gaming project. Baring all of that in mind, it'll be interesting to see what other hotly anticipated projects land on Fig and KickStarter in the coming years. Whatever they are, Psychonauts 2 is certain to go down as one of the larger ones.
