Outside of a few delays, Double Fine Productions has been very quiet regarding what to expect from the upcoming sequel to its 2005 hit, Psychonauts 2. While the game has had a large number of technical hurdles, being a crowdfunded game announced all the way back in 2015, losing its publisher Starbreeze Studios and finding a new one in Xbox Games Studios after Microsoft's acquisition of the company, only two major trailers have been released for Psychonauts 2 since its announcement. Now, seemingly to punish everyone, Double Fine has revealed that one of Psychonauts 2's levels features a horrifying spinning tunnel of teeth.

Double Fine, which is spending the month of October celebrating not only its 20th anniversary, but anniversaries for many of its games including Brutal Legend and Costume Quest. The studio is also celebrating the release of its 20th anniversary art book "20 Double Fine Years," which has prompted the team to release some concept art for Psychonauts 2 publicly. After fans prompted the studio's Twitter account to showcase a creepy looking world from the game, it shared the image of Raz riding his Thought Bubble through a tunnel made of gums and teeth.

To add some insight, it seems highly likely that the level that this artwork is based on takes place at the beginning of Psychonauts 2, in the mind of Dr. Caligosto Loboto, the villain of both the original Psychonauts and the virtual reality spin-off, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. Loboto is a deranged ex-dentist who was lobotomized as a child and was responsible for kidnapping the Whispering Rocks PSI Cadets before the events of the first game. During the first game, Loboto shows an insane obsession with teeth, which later turns to an even more insane obsession with brains.

The Psychonauts games have never been strangers to bizarre imagery and mature themes, as many fans of Tim Schafer's games will know. One of the game's more infamous backstory of Psychonaut Agent Milla Vodello, which chronicles her past of owning an orphanage which tragically burned down, the psychological effects of which manifest themselves as the player being able to hear the cries of the children during the level set inside her head.

Psychonauts 2 was originally announced during The Game Awards 2015, where Double Fine Productions CEO Tim Schafer that the game would be crowdfunded through Fig. By the beginning of 2016, Psychonauts 2 had raised almost $4 million in crowdfunding, exceeding its $3.3 million goal. In February 2017, Double Fine released Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin for PlayStation VR, a spin-off which acted as a bridge between the story of the first and second games. After losing its publisher, Starbreeze Studios, in 2019 and over three years of delays, Psychonauts 2 is finally slated to be published by Xbox Games Studios in 2021.

Psychonauts 2 will release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
