Considered by some to be one of the most anticipated sequels from Tim Schafer's Double Fine Studios company, Psychonauts 2 is a game almost 16 years in the making, despite the story taking place mere days after the events of the original. With a potential release date having been leaked on Steam recently, the platform game has been a hot topic for fans of the first game. With that, a new trailer has just been unveiled at this year's E3 event, revealing an August 25, 2021 release date.

The trailer shows Raz, the goggles-wearing protagonist from Psychonauts, arriving at the Psychonauts headquarters. It's a colorful, cartoon-y, and zany aesthetic video that many will be familiar with from the first installment. There's also brief snippets of juicy and exciting gameplay footage thrown into the mix for good measure. As with the first game, the sequel will throw players into some creative levels which feature explorations of the mind and tribulations of a cognitive persuasion.

The game itself deals a lot with mental health. In fact, Double Fine went ahead and hired a psychologist to ensure depictions of mental health are handled with care. Doctor Raffael Boccamazzo is working with the studio to ensure that it's a theme that is portrayed not only with care, but accurately as well. In this modern era of inclusivity, it's a good move for the development team to ensure the game depicts things sensitively.

Psychonauts 2 will also feature new Psi-Powers, which will allow players controlling Raz to connect people's thoughts together in this surrealist take on 3D platforming. While the sequel will likely be a firm favorite for those who enjoyed the original game, it could also bring in a new fan base who will get to experience the creative mind that Schafer and his studio have put into this one.

Originally announced in 2015, Psychonauts 2 was delayed a number of times. The last piece of footage before this new trailer dropped was back in August 2020. Schafer himself has stated that the reason for the delay was due to him and the team wanting to make sure the game is as good as possible. Given the look of the trailer, it seems to be shaping up to be an exciting sequel that many have waited a decade and a half for, and it's likely to strike for fans old and new.

Psychonauts 2 will be released on August 25 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
