One of the surprise viral gaming hits of 2017 was Doki Doki Literature Club, a psychological horror game inspired by dating sim visual novels. The game instantly became a cult classic, with its approach to subverting fans' expectations and offering an unforgettable and unique horror narrative. After announcing that new content would be coming to Doki Doki Literature Club in early 2020, developer Team Salvato has announced Doki Doki Literature Club Plus, an expanded re-release of the viral hit for PC and consoles.

Doki Doki Literature Club first released in September 22nd 2020 for PC, Mac, and Linux as a freeware game on itch.io and Steam. The game went on to become a viral sensation with streamers such as PewDiePie and Etika drawing attention to the game, which later went on to inspire multiple memes which further increased the game's popularity. The game was developed over two years from popular Super Smash Bros. Brawl modder Dan Salvato and a small team of indie developers.
