With a reported February reveal event planned for the PlayStation 5, speculation about Sony's next-generation console plans are reaching a peak. PlayStation fans across the world are pondering whether Sony will be sharing what the PS5 looks like, its release date, its launch line-up, or the console's price. One thing that's surprisingly been absent from the conversation is Sony's plans for the PlayStation VR headset, but a new rumor has brought the PlayStation VR back into the conversation.

According to a new report from Immersive VR Education, a studio dedicated to exploring VR's educational potential, a PlayStation VR 2 headset is in development. The headset will coincide with the launch of the PS5, which has been announced for release in late 2020. The Immersive VR Education financial report specifically says that Sony will be releasing "a new version of the PlayStation VR headset" with the aim of expanding the "high-end VR user base."

Unfortunately, the report doesn't delve into any further detail. Immersive VR Education is only noting that it will be supporting the device after its release. That means that there's no information about how the PlayStation VR 2 will compare to the PlayStation VR. That it's being developed alongside the PlayStation 5 should hint that the headset will be much more powerful than its predecessor, however.

The PlayStation VR headset was made with the base PS4 in mind. While the PS4 holds up as a great console, even at the PlayStation VR's launch in 2016 it was criticized for being so limited by the console's aging hardware. Cutting edge VR headsets on PC required significantly beefier hardware specifications. The PS5, rumored to be significantly more powerful than the PS4, should provide more than enough power for a cutting edge VR headset.

Recent reports indicate that the PS5 is set to be revealed in February, though the exact date of the event remains mysterious. It's unclear whether, if the PS VR 2 headset even exists, Sony would reveal it alongside the PS5 at this event. Sony might want to let the console speak for itself to start. The PS VR 2 headset could then be showcased at another event where it won't have to be hurried. Whatever's Sony plans, PlayStation fans will hopefully hear more information in the weeks to come.

The is PlayStation 5 is slated to release Holiday 2020.
