PSP2 is in the Wild and is a 'Powerful Machine'

As the 3DS continues to gain steam in the realm of handheld gaming, it was inevitable that we'd start to hear more about its chief rival, the PSP2. For the most part Sony has kept details about the system to themselves, but finally we have a developer claiming to have laid hands on it. Apparently, it is a powerful machine.

In an interview with NetherRealm Studios’ executive producer Shaun Himmerick, Industry Gamers were simply asking about the possibility of the new Mortal Kombat reboot appearing on the 3DS, but instead got more information than they expected:

“We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is.”

Make sure to take this with a grain of salt, Ranters, because it does have the potential to be a mix-up of classification. Perhaps Himmerick was referring to the PSP Go, or was speaking in regards to one of the newer iterations of the PSP and mistakenly referred to it as the PSP2. While that is a possibility, just as likely is the fact that the PSP2 is out there and is being actively developed for.

Speculation aside, if Sony wants to compete with the 3DS they are going to have to put some major effort into the PSP2. Just adding 3D to the PSP is not going to cut it at this point, so expect something like what Himmerick was talking about, a working house of a handheld machine perhaps with a touch screen. We'll keep you posted as more information comes in.

What are your hopes for a PSP2 Ranters? Do you want something closer to a 3DS, or a handheld PS3 lite?

Note: no, that is not an actual PSP2 at the top of the page. But you knew that, right?
