PSP owners should go and check their system's battery as soon as possible, as recent reports have shown swelling and, in some extreme cases, bursting or leaking batteries. This is happening even to PSPs that weren't used recently, so it would be wise for owners to go and double-check.

The PSP was initially released in 2004, and older models are more likely to experience the problem. That said, it would still be wise for everyone to check, as this can not only damage the PSP system if it leaks but is also a hazard if left alone for too long.

With that in mind, PSP owners that do find swollen, broken, or leaking batteries should know the proper way to dispose of them. As these are lithium batteries, they should not be thrown away in the trash can or even put in the recycling bin as they are hazardous.

Instead, people experiencing this problem should search for businesses that accept and recycle used lithium batteries and take these batteries to such a place. New PSP batteries can be purchased for $30 or less, so those still wanting to use their PSPs shouldn't have to shell out too much cash for a new battery.
