UPDATE 8/31: It seems that all of the PlayStation Network services have been restored. This includes palying online games, social features, PlayStation Now, etc. The outage lasted roughly two hours.

Original story follows.

PlayStation Network is currently down. It seems the PlayStation Network services went down within the last hour, and it's unclear exactly when the services may be restored. The problems seem to be impacting PSN users regardless of their platform of choice, meaning both PS4 and PS5 players are currently unable to access their consoles' online features. It's unclear exactly how widespread this is, but it does appear to be a major outage.

It's normal for online services like PSN to go down from time to time, and so it's unlikely that this is anything for fans to get panicked about. In fact, it's quite possible that PSN services will be restored within minutes, and so fans should keep that in mind. For now, though, they may have issues connecting to the various PlayStation Network services and getting the most of their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.

According to Sony's own service detection site, PSN users are currently able to manage or sign in to their accounts, access social features, or play games. Other services, like the PlayStation Now subscription service, are also down at the time of this writing. PlayStation users are also unable to access PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, or PlayStation Direct.

PlayStation Direct lets consumers purchase directly from Sony, and lately it has been getting a lot of attention thanks to it being one of the few ways to make it easier to buy a PS5 console. PS5 console supply shortages are still impacting the industry and expected to continue until 2023, so fans have had to utilize some tricks to get their hands on Sony's next-generation console. Sony isn't currently selling PS5s through PlayStation Direct right now anyway, but it still has to be frustrating that it's down for people that use it for other reasons.

Sony has not announced a timetable for when users can expect PlayStation Network services to be restored. Hopefully fans don't have to wait too long to jump back into their online games on PS4 and PS5. We will update this article as soon as all of the PlayStation Network services are back online.
