It's been 10 months now since the launch of Godfall, the action-RPG looter-slasher from Counterplay Games. Despite a wave of hype on the run-up to launch, Godfall received only average reviews. Many critics were disappointed with the game's lack of depth, and an over-reliance on grinding.

However, these issues may be addressed in the upcoming August 10th update. Coinciding with the game's back-release on PS4, Godfall will also be receiving two helpings of new content. The first will be the Fire and Darkness expansion pack, which will open a new location to players. The second will be the free Lightbringer update, which promises to greatly expand the game's endgame content.

Godfall Fire and Darkness DLC

The Fire and Darkness DLC will be the first expansion for Godfall, and introduces a brand new area for players to explore. The world of Godfall is divided into four elemental realms, only three of which were available in the base game. Following the course of Godfall's story, players pass through the Earth, Water, and eventually Air realm. The Fire and Darkness DLC will take players to the fourth and final region, the Fire realm.

In the expansion, players will be tasked with saving Godfall's Fire realm from an all-consuming darkness. It's been confirmed that this means new story missions that will introduce players to the area and its many dangers. In addition, players can expect to encounter new fire-themed enemies, bosses, and loot. While fans will have to wait and see whether the Fire and Darkness DLC suffers from the same problems as the original Godfall, the Lightbringer update sounds more promising.

Godfall Lightbringer Update

The free Lightbringer update will be available to all Godfall players from August 10th onward. It promises to greatly expand Godfall's endgame, an area that was soundly criticized for its repetitiveness. To do this, a new Lightbringer mode will be available for all players who have achieved level 50, which offers a challenging combat experience.

The new Godfall game-mode will challenge up to three players with defeating a mysterious new force of darkness that threatens the world of Aperion. To do this, they'll need to seal Dark Tears to allow the Light of the Seventh Sanctum to shine again. These battles will be races against time, with skill, teamwork, and optimized characters all essential to success. Because of this, players may want to use the new Godfall matchmaking beta, allowing cross-generation players to quickly and easily team up.

New Loot in Godfall

Players who triumph in the Lightbringer game-mode will be rewarded with new Godfall equipment, including a brand new tier of loot, Cursed Items. These are weapons that offer incredibly powerful buffs, but only if players can manage to lift the curse that binds them. To do this, players will need to defeat enemies in the Ascended Tower of Trials. Players who've been avoiding Godfall because of the its critical reception will want to keep a close eye on the game in the next few weeks. Only time will tell whether the two new updates have done enough to revitalize Counterplay's action-RPG, but there does seem to be a good amount of content within them.

Godfall is out now for PC and PS5, with a PS4 version launching August 10.
