Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are expected to launch near the end of 2020 and people could not be more excited. As more information starts to arise regarding both systems and with the added inclusion of Unreal Engine 5, both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are starting to look even more promising. However, for some in the gaming community, the inclusion of Unreal Engine 5 might serve as more of a detriment than an asset.

Unreal Engine 5 is the newest iteration of the popular Unreal Engine. Over the last decade or so, a cacophony of games has been developed using the Unreal Engine, including numerous Nintendo Switch games. It's a reliable game engine that has been utilized to great effect over the years. However, this new iteration, while extremely impressive in its own right, may lead to some problems.

As the years go on and as games have started to become bigger and more graphically impressive, the size of the game files has increased drastically. Some of the biggest and commercially well-received PS4 games have incredibly large game file sizes. With the addition and utilization of Unreal Engine 5, it seems like those file sizes are only going to get bigger.

In a recent interview with Ryan Shah, lead programmer and CEO of European game studio Kitatus and Friends, he explained how efficient and impressive the Unreal Engine 5 is. However, he also admitted that while the engine streamlines game development and allows for more visually impressive experiences, the size of game files will, unfortunately, "skyrocket."

At the moment, the current storage capacity on both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X is 825 GB and 1 TB respectively. That is quite a lot of memory storage between both systems, but if game file sizes start to regularly become anywhere between 100 to 200 GB, then most users will be able to have a handful of games downloaded on their console at any given time. If the file size of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is any indication of the future, then this could get out of hand.

On the seventh generation of consoles, installing game files onto the system itself was entirely optional, but ever since the eighth generation of consoles, it has become the new normal. As newer games continue to make their way into circulation year after year, file sizes continue to grow. The file size of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake alone was over 100 GB. Hopefully, both Sony and Microsoft will implement ways of increasing the storage space of their consoles by adding peripheral storage devices.

Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are set to launch in the holiday 2020.
