The next generation of consoles is almost here, and that means developers are hard at work getting games ready for them. With that being the case, fans can finally expect more information to steadily be revealed to the masses. While Sony is teasing a PS5 reveal for CES and Xbox revealed the Xbox Series X back in December, there's still relatively little fans know about the consoles. Luckily, it appears they'll be big improvements over this generation.

According to two employees of Daedalic, the studio behind the upcoming Lord of the Rings game following Gollum, the Xbox Series X and PS5 will improve over this generation of consoles quite a bit. Daedalic's CEO, Carsten Fichtelmann, stated, "I think Microsoft is doing some things better than they did in the past. And the PS5 will be huge." It's a pretty big vote of confidence for both ecosystems. At this point, even Phil Spencer has complimented the PS5, so it's fair to say that the next generation could be a major leap for the games industry.

Daedalic Game Developer Martin Wilkes had a little bit more to say on the topic. While Wilkes didn't claim to know what the Xbox Series X specs will actually be, he does believe that the Flash memory in the new consoles will be a boon for level designers, stating, "We don’t have to concern ourselves with streaming corridors anymore. I think that’s sometimes really painful – to squeeze down these otherwise beautiful, stunning environments because we need another corridor here."

New Xbox PS5 console Playstation 5

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X specs have leaked, but there still hasn't been much official information about the systems. That being said, it is reassuring that a developer has confidence in the console's abilities. If next-gen consoles mean bigger and bolder environments for players to explore, than that, in itself, should sell the experience for fans of games like The Witcher 3.

The next few months are sure to be eventful for the games industry. The leadup to a new console generation is always exciting, and there will likely be more game reveals for the systems over the course of 2020. The steady stream of support Microsoft and Sony have received from developers is also reassuring, which should help alleviate any doubts that fans have about the two consoles. Time will tell if they manage to become some of the best-selling consoles of all time, but it will definitely be an interesting ride along the way.
