It could be a while until developers only release their games for PS5 and Xbox Series X, suggests one developer. Microsoft has also suggested that there will many many cross-generation games for the Xbox Series X for two years after launch.

Speaking to Wccftech, Sergey Oganesyan, the marketing manager of The Sinking City developer Frogwares, has said that fans shouldn't expect a huge jump in game quality as "cross-gen titles will be a thing for some time." Oganesyan said that he doesn't think that "developers can momentarily drop their support of an enormous fanbase that has grown during the current-gen life cycle" and that Sony and Microsoft may have to give them a "financial incentive" to make up for the lost sales.

However, this doesn't mean that cross-gen games won't be able to use the PS5 and Xbox Series X specs. Oganesyan also said that fans will be able to see features such as better textures, bigger games, and better framerates. Sony and Microsoft have also said that their consoles may not have any loading screens, another thing that PS5 and Xbox Series X players will be able to enjoy.

Some may be disappointed at the suggestion that the PS5, and not just the Xbox Series X, will have cross-gen games for a while. However, as there are reports that PS5 supply will be limited at launch, something which will heavily affect the console's sales, releasing an exclusive could really hurt an indie developer financially. More than 102 million PS4 units have been sold, and while Microsoft doesn't reveal Xbox One sales numbers, that's a huge number of consoles for a game not to be available on.

It's important to say that this doesn't mean that there will not be any "true" PS5 or Xbox Series X exclusives. Sony and Microsoft own development teams which are likely making games just for their newest console. Ninja Theory confirmed that Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga will be on PC and Xbox Series X, so that's one game that will not have to made smaller to work on Xbox One.

There are rumors that God of War developer Santa Monica Studios is developing God of War 2 for PS5 and developers like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games may also have some unannounced titles in development. Most games may be cross-gen for some time but there isn't much to suggest that this will be a bad thing.
