At long last, the PlayStation 5's design has finally been revealed. After months of mystery and silence from Sony, the PS5's unique and progressive shape is vastly different from Xbox Series X, but these consoles seem to be polar opposites of one another, not just because one looks of the memes depicting one as a fridge and the other looks as a Wi-Fi router. Each console's physical appearance speaks volumes on the atmosphere the next PlayStation and Xbox are attempting to present to consumers.

Between the two consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X each have their own unique design aesthetics that resemble each system's attitude towards gaming. PS5 is a quirky and asymmetrical console with a two-tone color scheme full of energy and character. Xbox Series X is a towering symmetrical machine that evokes power and purpose. Both Sony and Microsoft each have its own unique identity in these consoles, and both have very different aesthetic designs to match them.

Xbox Series X's Aesthetic

Microsoft was the first to reveal its next generation gaming console back during The Game Awards in 2019. Xbox Series X was among the surprise reveals during the show, finally unveiling its towering appearance. The Xbox Series X primarily stands tall, with a bold black design similar to its most recent predecessor the Xbox One X. Almost resembling the ATX form factor of gaming PCs, the console has been most often represented in its vertical state, even though it's confirmed that the console can be oriented horizontally and vertically. There's not a whole lot of visual complexity going on with its overall conservative design.

Xbox Series X's visual philosophy depicts the console as powerful and purposeful, with its restrained symmetrical design representing a true gaming machine with that goal in mind. There's no mess or fuss about it here, Xbox Series X stands as a monolithic and brutish gaming console evoking its purpose without commanding attention from the room. While Xbox has before stumbled in its perception, the Series X makes it clear even in its design elements that it will be a gaming console first and foremost.

PS5's Aesthetic

From Sony's camp, the PS5 was revealed during its recent games reveal stream at long last. Where the PS4 before took on an ambitious angular design with its parallelogram shape, the PS5 leans even further into asymmetry. The system design is uneven, curvy, even pointy in some places, foregoing any kind of subtlety in aesthetic design. Each side of the console has flared edges with a rounded black middle partition separated by the system's cooling vents. PlayStation's now iconic LED system light illuminates the console's rounded lines and irregular shape. And yes, despite it's uneven design, the PS5 can stand vertically or be laid flat to accommodate whatever TV setup.

It's clear PlayStation wants the PS5 to be seen and recognized in any room it's in. Its overall shape and design is reminiscent of some strange futuristic technology someone might see in a world like Blade Runner or Cyberpunk. Sticking with the two-tone design shown on the DualSense controller, as well as integrating the system's lightbar in between the black and white, PS5's coloring is uneven and eye-catching. It's evocative and quirky, showing a creative attitude towards games that seems intent on instilling a sense of wonder or bewilderment.

Two Completely Different Design Philosophies

Putting the two next to each other, it's clear these consoles want to evoke two different reactions from fans. Xbox Series X's public image is one of seriousness, telling consumers this is a workhorse console that's capable of whatever's thrown at it. Pairing symmetrical design with a bold matte black without much excessive visual flair, Microsoft's console is all business aesthetically speaking. Sony tosses any notion of the PS5 being a "serious" gaming console out the window. It's curvy and weird but whimsical, a reflection of what Sony wants its gaming console to be. Physically, the appearance seems to tell fans that playing games on PS5 is all about providing different and unique experiences, not definitive experiences.

Two different messages for consoles that, at least from tech specs alone, are fairly similar. Xbox wants the Series X console to be seen like how many gaming PCs are marketed, as a serious gaming platform capable of great power. PlayStation's aesthetic is one of oddity and attention-seeking, clearly identifying itself as an eccentric gaming machine. Both aesthetics are representative of what Microsoft and Sony want from their next-generation machines, with game reveals of both first and third-party games to match. So far, this generation may have more fans playing favorites than ever before.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X are launching holiday 2020.
