It has been a long road to the release of the PS5, and now that it's finally here, the gaming community has been making the console go in and out of stock over the course of the last two weeks. While Sony has taken great strides in terms of giving as many people a chance of getting their hands on a PS5 as possible, the demand for the console has finally started to show in the form of sales figures.

The competition between the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S has certainly turned a lot of heads and sparked a significant amount of online discussion and debate. However, considering how close the separate launch dates were, it's been somewhat hard to tell which console is in the lead in terms of sales. While the Series X/S had a two day head start, apparently that hasn't stopped the PS5.

According to preliminary data from VGChartz, within the first 24 hours after launch day, the PS5 sold anywhere between 2.1 to 2.5 million units worldwide. This beat out the sales of the Xbox Series X/S by twice that amount. What's even more impressive is the fact that the PS5 managed to accomplish this a full two days after the Series X/S had already launched.

Though, it is important to note that this is still only preliminary sales data, and none of this data has been confirmed by Sony as of yet. Then again, it would make a lot of sense if it were true, considering that the CEO of PlayStation himself said that "absolutely everything is sold." If these numbers are fully accurate, and more importantly, if more consoles continue to sell out across online and physical retailers, Sony will see a massive amount of success from this console.

In a way, this high level of sales compared to the Xbox Series X/S makes a lot of sense. It was actually reported that the PS5 had outsold the Xbox Series X/S in Japan by 5x, but in fairness, PlayStation is a much more popular brand in Japan compared to Xbox. Sales in the US alone accounted for 1 to 1.2 million units.

It will be interesting to see how much more success the next generation of consoles receives in the coming months. Given the complications of the coronavirus, including COVID-19 raising gaming stocks to a record high, it's caused many people from around the world to isolate themselves. This in turn, has created a high level of demand for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, moreso than likely any other console generation to date.
