With the PlayStation 5 aiming to fix the issues fans had with the PS4, it makes sense that the platform’s achievement system would be refined further as well. Based on a recent discovery, it seems like PS5 players will be getting extra digital rewards for some of the trophies that they earn.

PlayStation’s trophy system is already rumored to be seeing quality of life changes like trophy progress tracking, and it seems like Sony is far from done when it comes to its attempts to make trophy hunting more worthwhile. According to MP1st, completing some trophy requirements will grant players certain rewards such as avatars and banners. Though unconfirmed, it is hard to argue against the photo evidence provided for this rumor.

In screenshots pulled directly from the video breaking down the PS5’s UI, the trophy images seen on the system’s cards are accompanied by text that reads “profile avatar” and “profile banner.” With the avatar being tied to a gold trophy and the banner coming with a bronze trophy for Destruction AllStars, it seems like PlayStation fans will be getting extra digital bonuses with certain trophies.

Trophy rewards are not unheard of for PlayStation fans, as certain platinum trophies for PS4 exclusives like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Bloodborne have provided players with themes and avatars for the games. Sony recently started a trophy-related sweepstakes for a LEGO Spider-Man figure, another attempt by the company to make trophies more than just a badge of honor. This improved PS5 reward system not only makes trophy rewards more common, but also easier to obtain by eliminating the inconsistent e-mail process that previously gave players their trophy rewards. Rewards for non-platinum trophies is a nice touch as well, meaning bronze, silver, and gold trophies will all become more important.

It will be interesting to see how developers use this new feature, as rewards may not be limited to just banners and avatars. In-game items could also be provided, like extra bits of currency or exclusive skins for earning certain trophies. Sony Rewards, which recently received a new PSN-based sign-in system, previously awarded players with Rewards points for earned trophies. While that feature was removed and is unlikely to return, it is nice to see that a new rewards system for trophy hunters has been put in place instead.

With PlayStation’s trophy system recently getting a leveling revamp as well, including unique badges for certain levels, trophy hunters have a lot to look forward to when the PS5 arrives. If this rumor proves to be true, players on the next gen console will be gathering special avatars and banners along with their coveted trophies.

The PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12.
