Modern technology makes it possible for video game console manufacturers to improve their consoles after the initial launch, addressing fan feedback, making quality of life improvements, and more. Sony has released numerous updates for its PlayStation 5 console since first launching it at the end of 2020. Some of these PS5 updates have been rather substantial, while others have been smaller in scope.

The latest PS5 system update was released on Wednesday, April 13. Upon booting up their consoles, PlayStation 5 gamers will be prompted to download the 1 GB system update. However, they may be wondering exactly what this update does. Unfortunately, the patch notes for the latest PS5 system update are rather vague and don't clue users in any specific changes that were made.

According to the patch notes, the PS5 system software update improves system performance. How exactly it accomplishes this is unclear, but this is far from the first time that the PS5 has received an update like this. In fact, it seems like most of the PS5 updates since launch have fallen into this category, with Sony "improving system performance" without providing more detailed patch notes. Nintendo does something similar with its Switch update patch notes, usually only offering more detailed notes when a new feature was added or a UI change of some kind was made.

While it seems as though most of the PS5 updates have fallen under this category, there have been more substantial updates to the system since its launch. One of the biggest PS5 system updates that's released made it possible for users to upgrade their console storage. This was greatly appreciated by many PlayStation 5 users, as the PS5 has limited built-in storage, especially when considering the ballooning file sizes of many modern games.

System software updates are always appreciated by the community, but some gamers may be more interested in PS5 hardware revisions. It may seem strange, especially since PS5 supply shortages continue, but reports indicate that Sony may be prepping a new PS5 model for release at some point in 2023 or 2024. According to the rumors, this so-called PS5 Pro console will be a big upgrade over the current model in terms of performance, though fans will have to wait and see if there's any truth to those claims.

As it stands, one would think Sony would be focused on addressing the PS5 supply issues and getting the current iteration of the console in the homes of as many gamers as possible. Then again, hardware revisions could potentially lead to a more efficient manufacturing process for the system. Whatever the case may be, PS5 users can look forward to more system software updates in the future.
