Those hitting the limits of PlayStation 5 internal storage may be able to upgrade this summer. From a recent report, it sounds like Sony is planning a change for PlayStation 5 that allows for players to expand storage size.

Those who managed to grab a PS5 before it sold out may be experiencing a certain problem after launch. With the available storage for games and media clocking in around 660 GB, some players will be reaching that boundary, especially since digital game downloads have become far more prevalent in recent years.

According to the leak, support for extra drives will become possible after a firmware update. This patch will also allow the Ps5 to unlock higher fan speeds to cool down the console during intensive games. One of the touted features for the console are fast loading and processing speeds thanks to the internal SSD. However, due to storage size, players were having to look into external storage options for the device. But because this type of addition can only store PS4 games, the problem of limited space still persists.

However, after this rumored update improving console storage will be a simple process. Afterwards, those playing on PS5 can just take off the removeable cover plate and insert an extra storage unit. A Sony spokesperson revealed that the company is working on enabling M.2 SSD storage expansions for the device. That said, there is no official confirmation on a release date and more details will be coming at a later point.

Even though 600+ GBs sounds like a decent amount of space, many gamers will know this to be up for debate. Certain titles, like the Call of Duty series, are pushing over 100 GB just for one game. With most games ranging anywhere between 25 and 50 GB, storage on PS5 is going to run out quick. And that is on top of it having the secondary consequence of restricting players from making full use of the fast SSD. So it is good to hear that Sony is aiming to remedy this issue through a future update.

Many will likely be wondering why it is taking so long for this to come out. Since the console released with this storage space, Sony had to know that these limits would come into the picture eventually. Plus, even with the update players will still need to acquire additional storage units. This is rather unfortunate given that the responsibility is essentially being shifted to the customer. Even still, players can just pick which PS Plus Collection titles to download as a way of avoiding the limits while waiting for the upcoming patch on PlayStation 5.
