The PlayStation community is pumped for the next generation of consoles. The PlayStation 5 will assuredly mean new games, a more powerful console, and hopefully for Sony, a continuance of its sales dominance.

One thing that will help the console compete in the next-gen will be the PS5's specs and overall performance. And according to a recent corporate strategy meeting for Sony, the new PlayStation doesn't seem to be holding back. Specifically, the new custom solid state drive (SSD) will apparently make the console 100 times faster than the PS4.

Sony is putting a huge emphasis on the speed of the console, as even though graphical fidelity and resolution are important, players being able to navigate menus quickly and cut down on load times is something many have been asking for as well. The Xbox Series X is also shooting for short load times, so the two are again going head to head with some of their concepts. Sony President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, who headed up the presentation, believes that the SSD speed will allow games to play with more immersion.

In order to further enhance the sense of immersion in games, we expect to improve not just the resolution, but the speed of games.

Many have conceptualized what faster load times would do for PS5 games. Especially in load intensive games, or open-world experiences where the player's progress is stopped by a town needing to render or a battle needing to commence, shorter load times thanks to a powerful handcrafted SSD would allow for smooth and immersive gameplay experiences.

The massive success of the PlayStation is undeniable as the PS4 has now sold 1 billion games. Continuing that success with a console that can play games at a smoother and quicker pace, including even things like home menu navigation, would be excellent.

There is still much to learn about the PS5, and fans all over the world are eagerly anticipating the release of the console later this year. Sony's method of trickling out small details is an interesting one, as any information about the new console is like an oasis in the middle of a desert.

Sony surprised the gaming world with the early showing of the PS5 DuelSense controller long before the console and games were shown, so the company is tackling this next generation in some interesting ways. But one thing seems to be certain, the PS5 is going to be fast.

The PS5 is slated for release in Holiday 2020.
