As promised, Sony has offered a deep dive on the PlayStation 5's technology, confirming the next-generation console's specs in the process. And now that the PS5 specs have been confirmed, fans can compare them to the Xbox Series X specs.

On paper, there are some considerable differences between the PS5 and Xbox Series X specs that consumers should take note of. For example, the PS5 GPU offers 10.28 teraflops versus the Xbox Series X's 12 teraflops. To some, this may make it seem like the Xbox Series X is definitively a more powerful console than the PlayStation 5, but that doesn't tell the whole story. For example, the PS5 I/O throughput is 5.5GB/s versus Xbox Series X I/O throughput of 2.4GB/s. So when everything is taken into consideration, the two consoles will likely have similar performance. However, it wouldn't be outlandish to say that these confirmed specs support the rumor that the PS5 is slightly less powerful than the Xbox Series X overall.

Something else to note is that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will likely share many of the same third-party multi-platform games. While these games may look or run a bit better on one console versus the other, they'll likely be generally the same experience regardless of which console players decide to pick up later this year.

Of course, that's assuming that the PS5 release date won't be delayed. The latest statement from Sony indicates that the PS5 release date is still on track for holiday 2020, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic could throw a wrench in those plans. It wouldn't be unrealistic or even all that unexpected to see the PS5 delayed to 2021, along with the Xbox Series X. But with the PS5 release date still many months away, fans shouldn't worry about that too much yet.

In the meantime, there is something that may be a bit more important than specs when it comes to what console consumers decide to buy, and that's games. It doesn't matter much if one has the most powerful game console in the world if it doesn't have the library to back it up, and so it will be interesting to see what PS5 exclusives Sony will bring to the table this go-around. Unfortunately, Sony stopped short of revealing any PS5 games during its technological "deep dive," but hopefully more information on that front comes sooner rather than later.

Fans are also anxious to learn the PS5 price, release date, and more, but it seems that those excited for that information will still have some time to wait.
