Sony has yet to officially reveal the PS5, outside of confirming its existence and showing a logo, and this fact has powered a series of rumors making claims about the upcoming console’s eventual reveal event. Simply based off of the timing of the PS4’s reveal event back in 2013, many rumors have been pinpointing dates within February and beyond as the time of the reveal event for the PS5.

From the beginning of the month to the middle of it, these predictions don’t seem to coincide with each other which has been making fans desperate to get any accurate information on the reveal. All of the rumors so far support the idea that Sony wants to reveal this new console imminently with some going so far as to predict that Sony already has a few exclusive games lined up to be revealed with the console such as Spider-Man 2 and God of War 2.

Still, there is no consensus as to when the event will exactly take place. Two of the rumored dates have already passed by with February almost halfway over, meaning either Sony decided to shift some plans around behind the scenes, or more likely, the alleged leakers were making stuff up. In either scenario, Sony has indeed been shifting some plans around due to the global emergency that is the newest coronavirus.

Coronavirus Could Affect Sony’s PS5 Plans

The newest strain of coronavirus to be discovered in humans, novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China, has quickly created a global emergency situation which has been sickening people around the world, along with affecting economies and the various operations run by global companies.

In regards to the video gaming industry, China is extremely important to gaming companies for reasons relating to manufacturing operations, gaming development, and China’s enormous gaming market. So if China is seeing limited global operations and travel (in and out of the country in some circumstances), the gaming industry is going to get hurt by the coronavirus too.

Although there hasn’t been any word from Sony or Microsoft, the severity of the outbreak and the damage that it’s inflicting on people (and the gaming industry) could mean the coronavirus might delay the launches of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, as both companies get consoles manufactured in China.

The outbreak could also partially explain why Sony included an interesting statement on the PS5 website that it recently put up. On the barebones web page, Sony states that it is not ready to show off the PS5 yet. However, there could be a number of reasons behind why Sony isn’t ready to reveal the PS5 yet, and it could’ve simply included this statement to avoid the ire of gamers expecting a February reveal.

PS5 Reveal Event Rumors

One consistent thing about rumors is the concept’s ability to hype people up only to disappoint them later when the contents of a rumor end up not being true. In January, two circulated PS5 reveal rumors that are now known to be false initially claimed that the PS5 reveal event would occur early on in February. One claimed February 5 to be the reveal date while the other claimed it to be February 12. With both of those dates now in the past, gamers are left to wonder what Sony’s plans actually are.

There is still more than enough time in the month for Sony to hold the reveal event but some people have already started to put their money on a March reveal. In particular, Twitter user PSErebus (whose track record of leaks isn't really trustworthy) claimed early on in the month that Sony has decided to hold the reveal event in March. They also claimed that Gran Turismo 7 and MLB The Show 20 will be shown off alongside the new console and that PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games will be playable on it.

With the PS5 launching later this year, it’s clear Sony has some kind of reveal plan set to play. However, until Sony confirms anything, fans are going to rely on rumors to find out when that reveal is coming. No matter what month it is, fans can always count on rumors to hold them through.

The PS5 is scheduled to launch holiday 2020.
