The road to the next console generation is well underway after the Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, revealed the Xbox Series X during the 2019 Game Awards. With a release date slated for the holiday 2020 season, the next console generation really isn’t that far away. However, PlayStation fans are now champing at the bit to hear anything from Sony regarding the impending announcement about the company's own next generation console, the PlayStation 5.

While Sony has yet to reveal any concrete details about the announcement for the PS5, the company may have actually just teased when the reveal of the new console is coming. Though this is all still speculative, the circumstances surrounding this rumor are convincing enough. On Sony’s official website, the company has recently updated the information regarding its official presence at CES 2020, with a pretty foreboding tagline: The future is coming.

Sony recently updated its official website with new information about CES 2020, or the Consumer Electronics Show. While the information Sony has put out right now is a bit limited, like where people can watch live streams of its presentation and the date and time that it will be available, the tagline Sony added to this page is far more interesting. This tagline, while innocuous at first, could potentially be hinting at the reveal of a lot of its next generation hardware, including the long-awaited PS5.

Underneath the #SonyCES in big, bold white letters and ‘The future is coming’ the webpage reads, “At CES 2020 Sony is unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before, to unleash new sensations and emotions.” While this sentence could very well just be marketing jargon, it undoubtedly hints that Sony is planning to unveil some form – or forms – of new hardware at CES 2020. That sentiment alone is pretty exciting on its own.

Many industry members have speculated that Sony planned to reveal the PS5 in early 2020, and CES is certainly a stage that Sony is comfortable on. However, the real question that this possible PS5 reveal hinges on is this: is CES really the stage that Sony wants to reveal the PS5 on? While Sony has attended many a CES in the past, the company usually doesn't announce its gaming-related endeavors there.

Sony usually tends to handle announcing PlayStation news separately from many of its other consumer-related electronics, like its cameras and TVs. That being said, Sony is going to have to reveal the PS5 sooner or later, and CES is a big show in its own right. As mentioned above, PlayStation fans are desperate for any PS5 news, like new patents for hardware like controllers.

Some other information has surfaced about Sony’s next generation endeavors, like the Spider-Man demo that was used to showcase the PS5’s enhanced performance. Additionally, reports from developers who have received dev kits for the new console have also surfaced, with many developers saying the PS5 is very easy to work with.

If those reports are to be believed, that’s very good news for Sony. Having developers say that a console is easy to develop for means that software from those developers can potentially come out faster, hopefully with fewer bugs or delays. Still, the new information on the Xbox Series X also looks promising, especially after seeing the Hellblade II’s trailer at the Game Awards run in-engine.
