The PlayStation 5 officially launched this past Thursday, inviting PlayStation fans into the next generation of consoles. PS5 owners are testing out their new consoles across the world, seeing how the console functions, how its new features work, and how their games look. However, they're also discovering things that the PlayStation team omitted leading up to launch, as it seems like there are a number of PS4 games that won't run on PS5 that weren't on the official list.

Justin Oneil at ThisGenGaming provided a list of games from their PS4 library that they tested on the PS5, only to receive confirmation that the games weren't supported. Six different games were found to not work on the PS5, including: The Gardens Between, Golem, PixelBT EXTREME!, Pool Nation, Tower of Time, and YIIK: A Postmodern RPG. However, ThisGenGaming did note that PixelBOT EXTREME! was fixed after it notified developer PlayHeart Games.

The reason these games do not work on the PS5 is surprising is that Sony previously provided a list of PS4 titles that won't run on the PS5. The list was just 10 games long, including titles like Shadow Complex Remastered, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, and others. Considering there were clearly some testing procedures to confirm which PS4 games worked on PS5, it's unclear why these 10 drew attention, but others did not.

To be clear, Sony does not appear to be misleading players necessarily. According to ThisGenGaming, the official PSN profiles for each of the titles on its list has fine text acknowledging that they only run on PS4. Sony is aware that they don't work on PS5, which is funny considering at least one of the game's developers apparently wasn't. The question becomes why the titles weren't on Sony's backward compatibility list, or why that hasn't been updated since.

It's possible that Sony discovered these additional PS4 games didn't work on PS5 after it published the previous list, or it could have even only discovered them recently. With thousands of PS4 games, Sony may not have been able to test all of them, and is only now catching up based on the games it sees new PS5 gamers playing.

Nevertheless, Sony will hopefully provide an updated list of PS4 games it knows do not work on PS5 soon. There are likely to be more than just these six and the previous 10, and since backward compatibility with PS4 is such a major feature for the PS5, that's the kind of information many PS5 buyers would like to know.
