The next-generation of consoles are highly anticipated because of the possibilities that the new technology will enable. The PlayStation 5 has now been revealed alongside information on pricing as well as a release date and many are eager to get their hands on the console. The pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 have sold out quickly and as a result, some entrepreneurial-minded consumers have decided to resell the console for a heavily inflated price.

The pre-orders for the console began on September 16 and rapidly sold out. While many would have expected the console to fly off the shelves quickly, rumors of Sony making fewer units and struggling with demand may have encouraged some consumers to act on the pre-order faster than they would have. The console is now available for pre-order from other consumers but a price that can be more than quadruple the original listed price.

The price of the PlayStation 5 disc edition was originally $499 with the purely digital edition being available at a cheaper $399. Many were happy with these prices as they remain competitive when compared to the consoles nearest rival the Xbox. However, to get hold of a pre-order system some players will now turn to eBay and find consoles that are listed for as high as $2,625. There are several listings for around the $2,000 mark and while there doesn't seem to be too many bidders, it is clear that many consumers have taken advantage of the pre-order system. The advantage for these sellers is that if the console does not sell and give them a significant profit, they will still have a quality console at retail price.

PS5 resell price

Many were impressed by the games on offer for the PlayStation 5 after the event on September 16. The promise of games like Final Fantasy 16 being exclusive to the console is undoubtedly swaying consumers but whether they will be willing to pay thousands of dollars is unclear. It's highly likely that many will simply wait for stocks to be improved and purchase the console at retail prices. Nonetheless, there may be a small number of people who are tempted by these eBay listings.

Despite rumors that Sony is producing fewer consoles than the industry anticipated, it is unlikely that a shortage will last. This is primarily because Sony would be missing out on profit if the consoles did not meet consumer demand. With this in mind, these ridiculous resell prices will likely have their value muted in the coming months.

The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12th, 2020.
