We know that Sony is making the PlayStation 5, and we know that the PS5 is most likely targeting a release date sometime in the 2020 holiday season. However, there is still a lot we don't know about the console, including its launch titles, specific release date, and price. However, that hasn't stopped Swedish retrailer MediaMarkt from taking PS5 pre-orders, listing Sony's next-generation console at an absurd price.

The MediaMarkt PS5 listing is selling PS5 pre-orders for 9999 SEK, which translates to about $1,050. This is an absurd price for a home video game console, and is almost certainly just a placeholder price that the retailer is using while it waits for official information from Sony. Most estimates put the PS5 at anywhere between $400-$600, and it would be very surprising to see it priced at more than $500.

While it's unlikely that Sony will price the PS5 at more than $500, there is something to take into account, and that's Trump's tariffs on China. Since Sony manufactures its consoles in China, the company has already warned that PlayStation prices could go up if the tariffs take effect. At the time of this writing, the Trump tariffs are expected to go into effect on September 1. If they're still in effect once the PS5 release date rolls around, then the console could be much pricier than many have anticipated.

Even so, it's pretty much out of the question that Sony would price the PS5 over $1,000, tariffs or no. Such a high price point for the PS5 would ensure that the console would be dead on arrival, as Sony struggled to sell the PS3 at just $600 back in the day. It doesn't seem likely that Sony would make the same mistake again and give the PS5 such a high price point that it would alienate its customers.

As for when we will learn the actual PS5 price point, that remains to be seen. There have been rumblings that Sony is hosting a PlayStation Experience event in December that will serve as a proper showcase of the PS5 and everything the console has to offer, but that has yet to be officially announced by the company.

At the very latest, we should know a lot more about the PS5 by E3 next year, including its release date, price, launch titles, and more.
